  • anyone figured out a fix for the Black screen/4 meg apeture problem with Win2k?

Is this only limited to MPV3 chipset systems running Windows 2000? I tried with an FIC PA-2013 rev 2.0 board and Rev 2.1 and still cant raise my bios apeture above 4 megs or i get blank screen at startup. my system is set up as standard pc also not acpi. Both boards are using the latest bios' I can find.

    Jedi,

I had that same problem taht I fought with for days. There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that I ended up reinstalling. The good news is that in order to fix the problem you need to disable busmastering in the display properties. Once I did that, I was able to use a 128 aperture, but no busmastering. I could never get it the way I had it previously (both mastering and aperture were on and at 128). This is why I reinstalled. If you don't want busmastering, this should fix the problem.

ok well i tried disabling the busmastering and it allowed me to change the apeture to 128 and get through startup but agp 1x is still the only active, plus I refuse to believe that this is the only fix because disabling busmastering is like cutting the G400 in half performance wise anyway (but i do appreciate your response). Well I ran powerstrip and got something interesting from the pcilist info. Why are their two listing for pci bridge and why is one disabled?

The PnP ID looks like it could be the CPU to AGP bridge. Unfortunately there is no PnP ID information at VIA's site available. Checking this out could clarify what is wrong although won't provide a fix.
Maybe you could ask VIA for information about the PnP ID. Sorry.

        Couldn't help (sigh).

well i went into device manager and all of the bridges seem to be fine. I did notice that I dont have a pci to pci bridge anywhere, wasnt there one in Win98?

I just visited the Matrox forums. Somebody got it working with Bus mastering enabled when he disabled IRQ steering under the device properties of Standard PC in device manager. Although everything looked fine he did it and it worked.

            Try it.

PCI PnP ID 3040 1106 is the power management controller where 3040 is the device id and 1106 is the vendor id. Because you dont use acpi (disabled) it seems though all PM functions are disabled.

sorry it works fine at 4 meg apeture, however im limited to agp 1x only which i still think causes a performance hit. Any ideas Gurm?

                  Jedi,

Nah, 1x doesn't cause a performance hit unless you are looking at benchmark numbers. What WILL cause a performance hit is, unfortunately, the MVP3 chipset. *shrug* If it runs don't complain. You won't see any better numbers even if you fix this problem, as the MVP3 is intrinsically slower in this area.

So this is a VIA problem? If so would a patch be able to fix the problem? (god knows it will be the next millenium before VIA releases a patch anyway LOL )

                      Hi Jedi..,

YES there IS a patch!!!!! But it will cost you about 225 dollars. Here's how you do it:

                      1. Open your case.
                      2. pull all ribbon cables and power connectors from your motherboard.
                      3. Remove all peripherals and your memory.
                      4. Remove your screws holding the motherboard down.
                      3. Open a window.
                      4. grab your motherboard and throw it out window in (3).
                      5. GET A BX motherboard and celeron processor.
                      6. Install in reverse order from 4 to 1.
                      7. Enjoy.

You will thank me later believe me.

                      Rags

                          Jedi,

You've never told us - does the G400 work ok at 4MB aperture? I mean, I realize it's irritating - but does the card work ok?

well some good news, FIC tech support must love me because they have called me back three times this week. The tech also gave me his personall email address as well (hehe shall I post it and be a hero LOL ) well the tech said that they had never tested the rev 2.1 board with the g400 and windows 2000, but as a courtesy to me since I had gotten the rev 2.1 board directly from FIC RMA he would have one of his tech test a system similar to mine with the g400 and win2k and find out exactly what the problem was and create a fix for it one way or another. Oh by the way Rags you know anyone who has a spare celeron and mobo they can give me since I have no money to upgrade?
