NFS5 frame rate solution

Open file dx7z.dll (located in Drivers\, length 155648) in any hex-editor and
change byte at offset 0x4a27 from 01 to 00. this solves problems with poor
frame rates.

This disables fog in game but on Matrox cards fog is not visible even if you
leave it ON. I think this is serious bug in Matrox drivers (fog is very slow
and sometimes it is not working at all, maybe it applies only to table fog).

Fog itself might not be visible on a Gx00, but won't this disable waterspray being visible when driving past waterfalls as well?

Or dust or waterspray from rain seen in the headlights (when on)?

Surfwienix - it works even with the demo, because the file is the same... 155648 is the size of the file, the byte you have to change is located at offset 0x4a27.

Jorden - if it's the same as High Stakes (headlights being affected by fog), then yes it would turn these off too.

impact, i'm working the first time with an hexeditor, what is an offset, i couldn't find 0x4a27. i'm using hexedit 1.03

This will make things a whole lot easier for you... Get UltraEdit 0,9MB shareware the 32 bit version with no dictionary files (assuming you have at least W95).

Install it, open the file dx7z.dll, then press CTRL+G and enter the location (0x4a27). It will move the cursor to the exact location (=offset). Change the 01 to 00 there and save the file, and that's it.

ALternatively, with the hexedit, open the file and scroll until in the left column, you see 4a20 which idicates that the first byte on that line has an offset 0x4a20. Because you're searching for 0x4a27, move 7 bytes right. There should be a 01 there... change it to 00 and save. But I recommend you use the UltraEdit, because locating the byte is safer with it.

Btw, enabling TripleBuffer in the registry under Porsche Unleashed does give better framerates as well, whereas it will give choppiness in HFS:HS for example.

edit Triple Buffer to 1 and even all 8 cars on screen at the same time, with trees lining the road, won't slow the game down

Matrox SHOULD make this "table fog" work on next gx00 version or I (and many more, I suppose) have to leap to the NVidia side. Need For Speed's are one of the greatest games in history and I don't like idea to buy new video card for it and at the same time loose this great image quality and features.
