When i play games in Win2K (Quake3 and UT)
my computer locks up after 5-10 min. or so.?

I use Win2K driver version 5.04 (have tried 5.03 but same problem)

    My system:
    Athlon 600 0,18u (not OC`ed)
    GlobalWin FKK 50
    Asus K7M
    128MB Memory card (MCT) RAM
    G400 32MB DualHead
    Creative SB 128 PCI soundcard

i have the same problem, although my system is different than yours, i do have the VIA chipset. i think that the problem has more to do with the win2k drivers for the SB128 PCI than anything else...in win98 i dont get the multiple channels on the sound card, but for some reason in win2k i have multiple sound channels...that is what i think part of the problem is. I am patiently (not really) waiting for the SB128 win2k drivers to see if that will indeed improve the situation. If you think that i am way off with my opinion about the problem, let me know...i'd like to know the TRUE reason myself

I dont think that the SB128 is the problem, i just bought my SB128 I had a SB16 ISA before and i had the same problem

PS: i forgot to mension my Gaming mouse in the system specs before (it kicks *ss

Try setting your AGP aperature down to 4MB, and see if you can at least play the games.

The Asus K7M´s minimum AGP aperture size is 32MB. I tried 32MB but it didn´t help.

In my experience, driver issues cause lockups pretty quickly. Given that it takes 5 minutes to experience lockups, you could be having a heat problem.

I have to back up paulcs here! A rise in temperature usually coresponds to an increase in thermal resistance. Which in turn requires more power for the components to function stabily. My system exhibits this problem consistently with certain games at high resolutions and 32-bit color depth.

Basically, my power supply (though it's AMD "approved" - 300W) can't sustain the current necessary along the 3.3v rail. The result is a hard lock, without video corruption, after about 16-19 minutes of heavy gaming. The solution I intend to try is an upgrade to a power supply that is capable of sustaining more current along the 3.3v rail. Once that arrives I'll be able to prove my theory.

Note: I am over-clocking a 0.25µ 650 Athlon to 750 MHz via a Northwind rev.2 GFD. My G400 is the MAX version and the issues began to surface when I tried to overclock it. The power supply is a two month old PowerMan FSP300-60GT, but it's only capable of sustaining 14A along the 3.3v rail (154W "combined"). It's replacement will be an Enermax 350W, which can sustain 30A along the 3.3v rail.

I'll have to settle for 16-bit rendering for the time being.

I think you guys should do what I did. When I first moved to Win2k, I had all kinds of problems with my SB128PCI. I had a rock-solid system as far as stability goes (Asus P2B board /w P2 350), but I had so many sound problems I got fed up and bought a SB Live Value; not a problem since, and I AM a gamer.

I Dont think my problem is heat related, cuz my system runs ROCK solid in Windows 98SE.

And I´ve ruled out the SB128 PCI as the trouble maker, cuz I had the same problem before i bought it (i had a SB16 ISA before).

The temp. in my case newer gets over 25-27 Degrees Celsius (even after hours of gaming + Set@home in Win98SE).

                      Now it runs perfectly

                      I did this:

After i set the AGP aperture size in the bios to 32MB, my system was more unstable, crashing in both games after a few sec and in Win after a few minutes. I thought i had read something about that problem over at matrox Tech support page.

And i was right... The solution:
Set the AGP aperture size to 128 or 256 (even if you have less RAM). My system runs perfectly now I have tried playing Q2, UT, ½-life and Q3 and i haven´t had a crash yet
