Age of Kings slooowdown? What up?

After about 2hrs, it all starts to stutter, mouse lags, looks like a slide show. Unplayable, really. I think I have more than enough system for this game; any ideas?

I get slowdown in AOE2 usually when the large numbers of troops are made, actualy playing the game with my roomate we got the game to crash there were so many troops.

I was told by someone at microsoft that the game does use a lot of resources (still think it's an awesome war game).

p3 500mhz
win 2k
512mb ram
G400 MAX 32mb
