  • Half-Life, menu back to game probs

I can not get back into the game when I exit to the menu in Half-Life. I have to quit the entire program and restart. It almost looks like the engine is minimized when I try to get back in, I see desktop and there's a bar in the top left that says Half-Life........

    Using drivers 5.52, G400 Vanillia (not o/c)

    Pentium III 600
    192MB RAM
    SBLive Value

No probs in other games, just this. Seems like an OpenGL problem. My friends with Athlons and TNT2 Ultras dont have this prob.

I don't get that problem, using the 5.52 driver (full OGL ICD - not using turboGL for this game).

But I also rarely use the menus, so I don't give it many chances to happen....

No problems for me with and without TurboGL drivers. I have been using the lastest Matrox drivers as well.

I don't use the TurboGL, but when I have it still gives me the problem. I don't think the TurboGL works well with Half-Life, it has lower low-end framerates it seems....

I don't understand why some are and some arent' having this problem. I have had this since I have used Half-Life with my G400. I have reinstalled Windows over the time that I've had the game...it has always done this.

Basically, if i go back to the menus from the game I CAN NOT get back into the game without either changing resolution or restarting the game.

With turbogl and half-life, I get an ultra swap-fest with what your describing. If I let it munch the hard drive for over 3 minutes, I'll finally get back into the game. But hell, when your actually connected to a server, you've timed out by then. A totally pointless situation. I just end the multiplayer session or exit half life to avoid this. Best option for me is to not use TGL at all.

I used to get the same problem. Someone on the forums (Kruzin prolley) suggested that I take the opengl32.dll (TurboGL) that the TurboGL utility puts in your C:\Sierra\Half-Life folder and put it in my gldrv folder then rename it to turbogl.dll then add the line "turbogl.dll Matrox TurboGL" to the drvmap.txt file that is in the gldrv folder. Then start Half-Life go to Video modes and one the side bar where it says "Default" choose "Matrox TurboGL"

well crap on me. It worked. And Ive been playing ever since. Thanks Kruz ;p

Fraid I can't take credit for that little tip.

As I said above, I don't use TurboGL for this game.

                        Kruzin,

Just curious, and maybe this could help us - say you join a game on a server, and it turns out to be a bad choice (bad lag, players, etc.), how do you quit that server and join another? What I, and apparently Dustin, do is hit the escape key to bring up the server selection menu, and then the problem begins (must exit and restart game, if lucky... if not, hard crash). Do you just switch by typing the address from the HL command line or something? How do you then get the current server info (# of players, map, etc.)?

                        Thanks for the info.

                        John

I pull down the console and type quit when I hit a bad server

I do not use the in-game finder to locate servers, in HL or any other game. I find my games with a freeware utility called PingTool www.pingtool.com

It's far more flexible than any in-game finder, and works on almost every shooter out there...

Unlike Kruzin, I do use the menu at times, and do not get the problems if I have my desktop set to 1024x768 and the game resolution set to 1024x768 or higher.

i have the same problem... but with a G200... i have my desktop to 1024 but it doesnt make a difference what resolution i play in... i still cant press escape.

This only happens to me in OpenGL mode and when i play in D3D mode i get the problem where i cant see the scores(its all blurred out)

It seems that matrox doesnt test its drivers well... they should at least try it out with the most popular games such as halflife/unreal/q3 etc...... instead of rushing the release

i know ppl that have nvidia/voodoo... and they say they never have problems...
