ok maybe that's what I'm going to do, buying a new Celeron CPU. But I want to be very sure that I will get a great speed increase. I mean: I want to be able to overclock that new CPU, or else I won't notice any difference (between a Celeron 466 and 533 or 566). What is the best and cheapest way to o/c? I rather don't buy Peltier etc. cuz it's so f***ing expensive (or can one of you guyz learn me how to make one myself?) . And on the mobo I have now (Abit Be6 rev. 1) Windows doesn't boot when cpu speed is 582 mhz (7 x 83), so why would Windows boot on that new Celeron CPU running @ 100 mhz fsb??? It's a waste of money when it doesn't.

Some specs about my mobo (I know, it's not
    very high-end):

Celeron II doesn´t have the same core as the older celerons. They have a 0.18u die, the same coppermine design, with SSE but only 128k cache (as opposed as 256 in coppermine).
Because of that, the new core can do much higher speeds than the old one (which limit would be around 600 MHz).
Your celeron doesn´t boot at 100 mhz fsb because you´re trying to clock it at 700 mhz, much higher than it could possible handle.

The celery II should work fine with your BE6 with the latest bios. You´ll gain performance not only because of the higher clock speed but also from SSE.

Take a look at this thread to go deeper on celery II overclock: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001980.html

Keep in mind that the celeron II is an excelent overclockable *budget* cpu. Intel managed to cripple them preety well, even when running at 800 Mhz they have trouble matching a PIII 600E or an Athlon 600.

I understand. But to I have to get extra cooling etc. or will I probably don't need that to get to 700 or higher?

I really don´t know if you need ehanced cooling. Never overclocked a celery II Try posting in the thread I linked and ask, obviously those guys over there are getting 533 at 800+ with ease.

You will need extra cooling simple because you CANNOT buy a retail celeron 533 or 566. These lowest speed celerons were purely intended for OEM use, not for direct sale.

As a result, you need an aftermarket cooler, and you cannot use the one currently cooling your celeron because it will not make good contact with the processor. You will also need a Slocket that supports FCPGA chips.

            Some options for heatsinks:
            - Alpha PEP or FC-PAL, these go for around $30 with a powerful fan

            - Thermaltake Aircooler Socket (also known as the Golden Orb). I have one of these cooling my celermine 533 @ 896MHz Only costs about $15-18 shipped!

            Some options for slockets:
            Abit Slocket !!!
MSI 6095 Master (im using one)
Iwill (dont know the model number)

These run around $20-25, but theyre the most stable around.

A better idea might be to get a Coppermine 600-650.
The price is falling fast on the PPGA ones.
(That means adding $20 for a slocket)
The new ones overckock very well.
My slot1 650 runs on a 142mz bus with stock cooling.
              Just a thought....

get this celeron2 566 and push this baby to 850 or more. they are excellent overclockers, with low fsbs, i dont know if youre g400 can handle 143 mhz fsb.

buy this celeron, push it to 100 or 103 fsb and enjoy, with old pc100 sdram and youre be6. what do you want more for this money ? and get an abit, iwill or msi slotket, its worth the money. and one of these alpha babys, these thingies blow youre cpu into pieces.

Well I haven't been in the CPU market for a while, so where can I buy those cooling babies? On a site I've seen the ppga celery 533, is this a Celeron II or I?

                    Hi Eek!

the one you listed is an old Celeron with Mendocino core.

the new Celeron II is always in FC-PGA form and the two clocked lowest are labeled as 500A and 533A to avoid confusion with the identically clocked old Celerons.

Ok, I've seen a fcpga --> slot1 converter somewhere for 35 Dutch guilders (I live in Holland), that's about 15 dollars. Is this ok and does it really matter what brand the converter is, cuz I suppose it's a no name converter?

                        Hi Eek!

Yes, it does matter which SlotKET you use !!!

I talked to quite a few local dealers here in Hamburg and ALL of them had moe or less problems with no name Slotkets ... they ALL recommended the Abit SlotKET!!!, because of its stability, high quality and availability.

Mine was 35,- DM, which is ~17 US-$ and hence not really more expensive than your no name one.

Btw, the ABit converter is highly recommended by any reviewer that used one, either for the Cumine or Celemine.

                        Cheers,
