• halflife display problems... help!

hi everyone,
for a while now, ive been having problems with halflife (cs in particular, but i found the same problem in tfc) related to the display of text. basically, most of the text overlays (like the tab screen info with frags/deaths/ping) show up as big colored blocks instead of text. all i see is a white block in place of any text that should show. the weird thing is, sometimes i can see some of the text, and sometimes its all just a bunch of white rectangles. heres a screenshot: http://www-inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~kennon/cstrike.jpg. im pretty sure theres something wacked with my video drivers since everything displayed fine when i ran in software mode. anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

im pretty sure the problem started when i updated my drivers with powerdesk 5.52 a couple months ago. im using a matrox mystique g200 agp and direct3d. the current drivers are 4.11.2520, except for powerdesk which is version 5.52.015. its all running on a p2-300 with 192mb of ram.

thanks in advance for any advice!

Well, it's a common problem.
Do you have TurboGL installed? If so, uninstall it.
Do you have TurboGL not installed? If so, install it. This may sound weird, but it often helps.

G200 does not have TurboGL.
It does have a full OpenGL ICD, so it will do OGL.
The problem you describe usually happens in D3D mode with the G200. Try switching to OGL mode...

hm ok ill try that out tonight. will i see any major performance hits if i use ogl instead of direct3d, though? im averaging 20fps now (10fps and below with a lot of action) with 640x480; any worse, and id pretty much be playing with a slideshow. oh well... maybe i should splurge on that geforce.

thanks for the help, guys.
