• g200 D3D, Open GL, Half-life g200d3d.cfg Problem

ok im running:
matrox millenium g200 8mb
Pentium II 350mzh
64MB Ram

and without d3d or open gl mode i get an average of 15 frames per second in counter-strike (half-life mod)

in d3d mode...i get 20-30 fps, it runs fine in d3d mode, but it says cannot execute valve\hw\g200d3d.cfg when it trys to run

d3d mode looks ok...its extreamly smooth...cant see much texuting

and i cant even run open GL mode, cause it says my card dosnt support it....and when i try to upgrade my drivers...windows boots up but its a blank screen

iv never been able to get the newer drivers for it to work

please help!

Do you have a full-specs list and IRQ list for us? Maybe something is wrong with your IRQs.

HL wouldn't work too good with the TurboGL or OpenGL before on a G400, but that's been corrected. Though I don't know if it's the same for the G200.

What you could do is download and install the PD5.52.015 drivers, plus upgrade your G200 BIOS to BIOS 1.09

If PD5.52.015 doesn't work, or if you have it already, work your way down to a Powerdesk that will work in your system.

But before that, please post full specs and the IRQ list. We can help

HL is best played in OGL mode, even on a G200.
Greebe played TFC and CS at the LAN party on my G200 rig, and it ran fine in OGL.

So, as Jorden said, give us the full system specs, including URQs...also what screen resolution and color depth you are running.

It looks like it's set up OK.
You have a unique IRQ for the card, and are running 16bit color. It should work.

Check in the game folder for a file called "opengl32.dll". If it's there, remove it.

In the game, what OGL device are you chosing? It should be default OGL.

The only other thing I see there that bothers me is:

------------------------------------
Inactive Display Entries in Registry
------------------------------------
Card name: ATI Rage 128 Xpert 99 (English)
Driver: ATI2DRAA.DRV

There are ATI drivers still in your system. You probably did not get them fully removed before you installed your G200.

To get rid of that ATI stuff:
Boot into Safe Mode, and go to your device manager. Remove the ATI card there (it won't be visible unles in safe mode). Then run regedit, search out any ATI entries and delete them.

Ok heres my tips,

try version 5.41 of powerdesk, and update to bios 2.7 (the file 1-09) that jorden mentioned. Just make sure u run the uninstaller cuz u probably have like 10 different powerdesk versions sitting on ur system.

dont worry to much about HL saying cant find config mine does that aswell but still runs dandy if u ask me

your irqs look ok try this much for now and let us know how u go. I couldnt get 5.52 to work and ive read its a major drama with any g200 so go for 5.41.

Good luck

i have old old powerdesk drivers right now, they dont even have an un-install thing i dont think ;( ill try it though.

i have tried to upgrade my bios before...and it errored and said "error: cannot program bios"

and i have tried almost every matrox driver on the page before, but ill try the ones you listed too

thanks

ok i downloaded pd 5.52, and bios 1.09
i changed my display adapter to standard vga, removed matrox from display, rebooted
booted into normal 16 color 640x480 mode then

i removed all matrox things from the registry
i removed all matrox files from the hard drive

then i restarted, did dos prompt only
updated bios
it said
bios programmed 4 times

that sounded sucessfull to me,
so i rebooted, back into 16 color mode, installed pd 5.52, rebooted, it asked for install.inf, i gave it the 1 from the pd 5.52 dir, it installed the matrox card, it rebooted...then locked up on windows loading....just like it has always done when i try to update the drivers.

so now im going to download version 5.41 and try it, if it locks up on that one, ill try a lower version number

any comments, suggestions?

help

thx

4.12 worked, 4.51 worked
downloaded 4.33c - going to test
downloaded 5.13 - going to test

if my theory is correct...the 5.0+ drivers don't work, but im not sure yet, going to test it soon

4.33c worked
5.13 locked up

so its true that on my system version 5.0+ drivers lock up...

and i even found out exactly what file is causing it to lock up by using the bootlog.txt

here is the last peice of bootlog.txt with the 5.13 driver:

[0003BC40] Loading PNP drivers of ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller (PCI\VEN_10B9&DEV_5229&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_20\BUS_ 00&DEV_0F&FUNC_00)

[0003BC44] Dynamic init device G200

as you can see it trys to load g200.vxd (virtual device driver), and locks up.

why? i have no clue

now here is a clipping off bootlog.txt with the 4.33 driver:

see, the 4.0 virual device drivers load fine, its just the 5.0+ drives (where they changed lots of stuff...the updates go from 1.7 mb 4.0 drivers to 4.7 mb 5.0 drivers...and as you can see they changed the name of the virtual device driver from mgapdx64.vxd to g200.vxd

so unless anyone has any idea why the 5.0+ g200.vxd virtual device driver is locking up, or any way to stop it or help in any way...if that cant be fixed, my question is...wich 4.0 driver should i use?

4.51
or
4.33c (this 1 came after 4.51, its a lower driver number but its mircosoft certified)

anyway

I copied & pasted your IRQ listing down here, and would like to ask you a couple of questions about it.

00 - System timer
01 - Standard 101/102 key board
02 - programmable interrupt controller
03 - 56k plug and play modem
03 - com2
04 - com1
05 - v1433vqh-u internal faxmodem
06 - standard floppy disk controller
07 - printer port (lpt1)
08 - sytem cmos/realtime clock
10 - sb16 audio device
11 - windows sound system wss device
12 - matrox millenium g200 agp
12 - irq holder for pci steering
13 - numeric data processor
14 - ali m5229 pci bus master ide controller
14 - primary ide controller (dual fifo)
15 - ali m5229 pci bus master ide controller
15 - secondary ide controller (dual fifo)

Okay, first off:
03 - 56k plug and play modem
03 - com2
04 - com1
05 - v1433vqh-u internal faxmodem

IRQ#3 I understand, but why do you have your com-port 2 enabled then? As it's a PnP modem, it's internal, right? So why did you leave com 2 enabled? (You can disabled it in Windows, in Device Manager)
Same goes for com 1, if you're not using a serial mouse. If you are using a serial mouse, leave com 1 in the list

Then the faxmodem on IRQ#5. Bit of a strange place, as it's usually sitting right next to the modem, so it should be on either IRQ#3 at this moment, or somewhere completely elsewhere.

For:
10 - sb16 audio device
11 - windows sound system wss device
12 - matrox millenium g200 agp
12 - irq holder for pci steering

The SB on IRQ#10 would love to sit on IRQ#5, the Windows sound system would love to sit on IRQ#10 and the G200 should be on any IRQ# between 9 and 11, so either on IRQ#9 (as it's free), or when you can move the SB & WSS on IRQ#11.

Still following me?

What should be on IRQ#12 then? If you have a PS/2 port in your PC, the PS/2 controller sits here. And since about all PCs come with a PS/2 controller these days, either your system is very old (what I don't believe) or I'm wrong

Then the last flukes in the list:
----------------------------------
Inactive Sound Entries in Registry
---------------------------------
Card name: Wave Device for Voice Modem
Card name: C-Media Inc. Wave Mixer Aux
Card name: Duplex/SB16 Wave

Do you by any chance have 2 audiocards in your system? Or did you have a WSS before you got a SB PnP card? (Probably an SB16 or SB32 PnP)

Jord.

ok should i just turn off automatic irq settings and force them to those irqs?

the WSS (windows sound system) is onboard sound, its the only soundcard in my system, i think its powerwed by sb16

the modem is a voice modem so its seeing that as a sound card or something also

if i go into cmos, there is a pnp settined called "assign irq for vga" if i turn it on, it sets the matrox card on an irq of 9

anyway, is there a way i can leave it on automatic settings so windows can automaticly assign new irqs to new devices, but still have all the irqs changed(like both modems on irq3)

or do i have to leave it as automatic settings off, to get the irqs to stay?

well ill come back shortly, im going to go mess with the irqs

ok i disabled com2, and that helped...
i just need to buy a ps2 mouse so i can disable com1 also. then there wont be any conflicts what so ever on my machine

here is a list of my current irqs:

once i get my ps2 mouse i can get rid of com1
and everything can sit on automatic settings, unconflicted and working

by the way, i have 2 modems for multilinking..one 56k modem and one 36k modem, they both dial up and work together and i get about 8k a sec...i think they call it ISDN or something

anyway, do u think once i get all my irc things resolved that those 5.0+ drivers will work?

With your G200 on IRQ#9 you might have a better chance of getting the 5.0+ drivers to work, but I can't guarantee it. (Sorry )

I want to compliment you on your IRQ list now, looks alot cleaner
I just hope this didn't wreak your serial mouse?

anyway, is there a way i can leave it on automatic settings so windows can automaticly assign new irqs to new devices, but still have all the irqs changed(like both modems on irq3)

To start off with the latter: That would be impossible. When one modem uses IRQ3 already, the other one can't. So what you did is good enough.
Getting Windows to see and assign IRQs? Windows will do that no matter what. But by putting your BIOS to Non-PnP OS, you can force your cards to an IRQ they'd better use, in case Windows flunks (know what I mean? )

the WSS (windows sound system) is onboard sound, its the only soundcard in my system, i think its powerwed by sb16

Okay. As far as I see it in the new list it sits fine And the SB16 now as well.

Your HL should run faster now.
The error msg about the g200d3d.cfg might be because it can't find such a .cfg file?
