  • Need for Speed 3 problem.

The G400 isn't recognized as a valid 3d card in setup.Tried setting softwarerendering, no go.
Game doesn't run at all. No errormessages, just for a few milliseconds a new window opens and closes.

    System:
    Mainboard:Asus P3V4X ( BIOS 1005 )
CPU: PIII/700E with Abit Slotket III
    Memory: 128 Mb PC133
HD: IBM 27,3 Gb 7200 RPM
    Video: G400 32 Mb SH ( driver 6.00.010 )
    OS: Windows 98 first edition
Latest VIA drivers for mainbord installed.
System runs great with 4X AGP in all other games.

    Any clues?

      Yes, I've got a clue:
      NFS Registry Hacks

Go for the first hack only, although you can look for the Triple Buffer hack as well.

If it still doesn't work, let me know (email or here) and I'll install NFS3 if I can find it in the mess here

Be aware Surfwienix, that the 1024x768(32) was for NFS:HS ... But there was a trick to get NFS 3 to work in 1024x768x32, and I think it had to do something with adding -voodoo behind the nfs.exe in the startup link.

Let me track that one down.

edit: try the Auto-Patcher if the above doesn't work.

        Jord.

          Help!
I have a similiar problem, on NFS: High Stakes, the game quits as soon as the actual race starts. No error message or anything. I just get kicked back to the desktop. I tried the above mentioned reg hack, but windows wouldnt start properly.

          My system
          celery 400
          asus p3bf
          128 MB ram
          diamond mx300 sound
matrox g400 32MB single head(currently using 5.20 drivers) (6.00 drivers did the same thing)

That might have another cause. Have you checked your desktop setting (resolution and bit depth) against what you try to play it in in NFS:HS?

If your desktop is set at 1024x768x16 or x24, and you try to play x32bits, you'll be kicked back to the desktop.

Did you also check for conflicts in your IRQs? You could post your IRQs for us.
(I want to show you my IRQs !!)

Oh, and please say which drivers you use for the MX300.

            Jord.

I tried to use the same resolution and depth- I still got kicked out to the desktop, but this time all my icons were "whited out".

I'd advice you to goto Vortex of Sound, drivers page to download the latest soundcard drivers there.

As far as I understand, the drivers you are using at this moment are problematic with a couple of games.

Also on this site are Game Patches. Not for NFS:HS sadly, but you might want to look in them.

                Jord.

Right!! It does have to do something with sound. When you asked what mx300 drivers I was using, that rang a bell, I changed the Audio Mode in NFS from 'D3D/EAX' to just plain stereo, and it works perfectly. I still am going to try the new Aureal drivers.
Thanks for the help! (shame on me for blaming my beautiful g400)

OK, the registry crack didn't work.

G400 is on IRQ 10, which is shared with "IRQ holder for PCI steering".

DirectX 7a ( Dutch ) lists the G400's 6.xx betadrivers as not validated, but all 3Dtests are executed perfectly.

Nothing worked. The G400 is listed correctly in the registry, but when choosing a 3D card in NFS3 setup, only softwaremode and 3Ddevice1 are mentioned.
My original problem still remains unsolved.

                      Any other ideas, anyone?

You can play with the 3Ddevice1, don't you? Is it that you just want to see the G400 in the setup? That's a bit difficult, as at the time NFS:3 was released, the G400 was a thought at Matrox.

If you're not sure about the PD6 drivers, why not uninstall them and use PD5.52 for the time being? Also, you might want to look around for the English DX7.0a and install that one.

                        Jord.

Not seeing the G400 listed as a 3D device is not the problem, I couldn't care less. Not being able to play the game pi*#es me off.

Why would I want to install a UK or US version of DirectX 7a ? The core is supposed to be language-independent.

Some of the games need the DX version from the country they originate from. I've had problems with Dutch DX5 and DX6 versions when playing NFS games. Updating to the English versions of DX helped me alot. Do know that the G400 doesn't have any DUTCH drivers !!

So if you play any game with the G400 DH - English settings, you're better off with the DX version in the same language.

Sounds strange, I know, but experiment around and you might notice this as well.
Besides, Dutch DX versions are on the scene way after English version are. Most components in your PC, and drivers used, use the English language. Why try to install an Dutch version of DX then?

                            Jord.
