lol yeah well actually I haven't run a benchmark for years, I'm just looking at that netgraph thingy (net_graph 3) in the bottom right corner of the screen while I'm dead in Counter-Strike (nothing better to do, ya know? And I'm tellin' ya Rags m8, that that number is a whole load higher, and the game is a whole load smoother, when I'm using TGL So wos goin on?! I mean 80-90 FPS, at 1152x864, this is insane! It's just sh1t loads faster man. Don't care much about quality, didn't even notice the difference. It's the creamy smooothness I like If the jerks were gone this would be just beeaaauutifull

oh BTW it's the same story with both 'pootas i've got here, my old P3 800 and a shiny new P3 900. So it isn't a one off flukey type thing. But then I built them both so maybe I screwed up twice

If it's jerky how can it be smooth. Or am I missing something here. Anyhow, if you are comparing online play, then you should definitely be capping your fps using some sort of autoexec.cfg in your cs/tfc folders to limit the number of fps. I would hold it around 40 fps on an isdn line. You will get better ping performance and less packet loss.

AHHH no it's a different kind of jerkiness man please read my first post It's like a regular freeze every whatever number of milliseconds while the ISDN card is doing stuff, in between those freezes all is buttery

You don't need to cap your FPS in HL anymore since those groovy folks at valve de-coupled the network code from the renderer in HL patch v1.1.0.0 Also the engine limit is 100FPS not 72 now Maybe someone cares, I do

BS, you still get better performance online when you cap your fps. Believe me, I spent several evenings monkeying with it this last week after I got my cable modem. I got my packet loss down to a virtual zero, and my pings are down 40 percent. Really. Try it, you may like it.

And I did read your first post. And all the ones subsequent. Another thing to try also is make sure there are no TSR (hit ctr alt del, and kill any unnecessary programs, even powerdesk)running.

ok easy man, i'll try that but you see my pings aint the problem here. Actually my pings are amazing, they just went down *loads*, no idea why, I get like 40-50 now (used to be 80-100) and that's with a crap free ISP

I'm confused, how can you see your packetloss? is that the "loss" numer on netgraph? That's always zero for me. Anyway, this aint a net problem 'cos the same jerky thing happens if I start a *single-player* game with fat download going in the background.

No, it's this jerky turky video that ain't right

                Thanks again

right yeah good point, well I CTRL-ALT-DELed everything except "Explorer", is that the right thing to do? Could there be something else going in my beast that I can't see? Something sucking up processor time maybe? But then why would that only effect TGL, not ICD? Hey, my brain hurts

just a quick q for anyone, will the Matrox Uninstaller remove PD6 ok? Or is it just for the 5 series? I'm really not keen on going back to 5.55, I don't want to b*gg*r up anything else that's working fine now U really think it's worth a shot then? I'll try it I guess, not hopefull

                        hi again

                        Hmm no more replies

Oh well i'm back on 5.55 now. Guess what? No difference, just as jerky. BUT something wierd is going on. First, I've found the jerking is ALWAYS present, it's just more severe when using TGL and PD6. BUT this might just be because while using TGL the FPS is higher, so the jerks are more obvious, you follow? Also, with 5.55 it doesn't seem to matter much whether I use TGL or just ICD, speeds are roughly same but i'll need to benchmark to be sure.

I'm going to have to figure out how to benchmark HL so I can get some figures to back all this up. I'd like to show you the jerking but I can't think how, short of video-ing my monitor and posting an MPEG or something. Urgh.

There really is something badly wrong here and it's a shame 'cos everything else is now so sweet that this has to ruin it I don't know if it's Matrox's hardware or software, AVM's hardware or software, my motherboard/chipset setup, windows, or some other piece of hardware in there entirely. I just don't have a clue

I guess I should post something on the official Matrox support board, but I need numbers/evidence etc., and I always come here first since you good people have always got me sorted out in the past

Try reloading your sblive drivers as this has worked in the past for "jerks"
                          good luck!

thanks Jim but I don't follow, this is happening when the ISDN card is active, doesn't seem to have anything to do with sound (?!)

OK I recorded a little demo of me walking around on cs_assault and did "timedemo" on it a few times

This was using the PD6 beta, at 1152x864 16 bit colour, all options kept constant.

                            ICD: 48 FPS
                            TGL: 61 FPS

i.e. TGL 52% faster than the ICD!!

I had figures for PD5.55 aswell but I forgot to raise the console and realised afterwards that had f**ked up the results

Anyway that shows exactly what I'm talking about, TGL is MUCH faster. Unless I'm doing something silly like running the ICD with v-sync on and TGL with V-sync off? How do you toggle v-sync in OpenGL? Thanks

Smiff the difference between 48 and 61 fps is 27% not 52%!

oh yeah well that's why I failed my maths A-level Anyway either way it's loads faster, yes? The point is there are times when theres lots of action that with the ICD the framerate drops into the low teens, THATS when I need the extra speed, not when I'm poncing around on my own recording demos!

Anyway this is beside the point, please, why is my video so jerky? It's really jerky. arghhh!

It looks like I'm going to have to change either my ISDN adapter or graphics card, and I don't want/can't afford to do either Please help if you can
