  • Quake 3 freezes everytime...

Quake 3 freezes everytime forcing me to do a hard reboot. It freezes right after the intro, before the main menu, it doesn't even got to the main menu...

    I have an Athlon 750
    128megs ram
    G400 (not Max)
    SB Live! X-gamer

UT runs just fine, so does Soldier of Fortune. I can't figure it out. Any ideas? Has anyone had this problem before?

I believe i have the latest drivers for all the components... The drivers for the G400 are the 5.52 ones, with TGL 1.3.

Ok, I downgraded to the 5.41 drivers, and Quake runs fine. But now the power desk is complaining that TGL 1.3 is not compatable with the current PD version. ??????? What in the hell? Do I have to get TGL version 1? I don't get it.

Chris, the 5.52 drivers have problems with some VIA chipsets. Matrox fixed the problem with the 6.0 beta set. Uninstall TurboGL, using TurboGL manager, and then uninstall PowerDesk 5.52.

Make sure you're using the latest VIA AGP driver.

I've tried the beta 6.0's with a G400 on a KX-133 chipset, and they worked fine. It's a beta set, so there might be the occasional bug, but they seem pretty solid. You really don't need TurboGL if you use them.

If using beta drivers doesn't appeal to you, downgrade to the 5.41 set. It's the 5.5X's that have the problem.

We're posting at the same time. I think TurboGL 1.3 is for the 5.5X drivers only. Either downgrade, or upgrade to the PD 6.0 betas. Then you can forget about TurboGL once and for all. Don't forget to get rid of the files in your game directory.

Uh-oh. They posted a new beta set today: Ver. 6.01. Haven't tried those.

Thanks Paul! I had a BLAST last night with Quake 3 and my friends! We musta played for at least 4 hours, straight! Yeah, we're nuts... Heh heh.

Anyway, you mentioned the TGL Manager, I used it to uninstall the files, but if I upgrade to the 6.0 beta drivers, how to I get rid of TurboGL completely from my system? Or does TGL manager take care of it? After I uninstall TGL, do I just remove the PD drivers using the Uninstall Util, reboot, and then point the Hardware search to the 6.0 drivers? Are there going to be any TGL .dll's floating around?

TurboGL can be removed from a particular directory by deleting the opengl32.dll file. But don't delete it from \windows\system*!
