  • G200 &Unreal

I recently bought used G200 card, but I can't play Quake2 or Unreal with it.
Previously I had voodoo3 card so could those old drivers mess things up?

I have version 4.00 of Unreal and latest drivers from matrox site for g200.

At first when I started Unreal all I could see was lights and my gun. Then I found an old d3d patch for Unreal (-98) and with it I now can see all textures, but framerate is around 12 fps, so playing is impossible.

    Quake2 won't use opengl.

    my machine:
    win98
    celeron 433
    64MB
With those components I should have at least 30 fps, right?

    Help please!

Hmm. For Quake2, make sure you're using the Default OpenGL setting and the latest G200 drivers, and it should work. Also, just to be safe, if you previously were using the 3DFX miniGL, you'll probably need to delete any *gl.dll files from the Quake2 directory to get the game to see your G200.

As far as Unreal goes- well, let's just say that this engine was heavily designed for Glide. It works in D3D (and there's a new patch for the game- supposedly the final one, that is supposed to update the engine to the same version as the Unreal Tournament 425 patch, but it seems to be slower than the next older Unreal patch I used to have). On another note, with Unreal, make sure you're NOT using 32 bit color (not even sure the game gives you the option), detail textures, volumetric lighting, etc. Even then, you may want to stick to 640x480 resolution or lower for best performance. The G200 certainly isn't the fastest card on the block anyway, but since this game was originally written for Glide, all D3D cards suffer!

Good luck, and maybe someone else who actually has a G200 and Unreal can post more specific info on the best settings to use it with Unreal.

What Ace said about Quake is right. And Unreal too, but as far as Unreal, it works fine with ver 5.52 Mtrox powerdesk drivers. Use the matrox uninstall utility to remove any old matrox drivers. Also do a very thourough removal of your Voodoo drivers from your whole system. They can cause alot of probs, if you don't have a Voodoo card left in your system. As far as unreal, use the 226 patch. It works best for me. I do use a G400 now, but this stuff works for my G200 as well. Turn off shiny surfaces and some of the other fancy stuff. It'll do fine

I use a G200 / Celeron 400 on an ASUS P2B with 128 MB. Keep Unreal in 640 * 480 mode and use 16 bits colours. Then it should be playable. The same applies to UT. 800 x 600 works in UT as long as there are not to many players or bots (up to 6). Above that, I have to go back to 640 * 480. Also put texture details to medium.

Your problem sounds like the same one I was having. The latest drivers, 5.52, have a known D3D problem with the G200. Download the 5.41 drivers and everything should work great.
