Asheron's Call: Crashing to desktop in town

I have a real serious problem with Asheron's Call in that I am always crashing to the desktop or completely locking up the computer. These problems only occur while I am inside of town limits.

Here is a short list of things I have tried to resolve the problem:
Turned off all sound
Turned down all textures to 1/2 in 1024x768
Set resolution down to 800x600
Other things I can not think of right now

Has anyone else been experiencing these problems with a Matrox card. I am clueless as to what could be causing the problem since it only occurs in town and is not dependant on how crowded town is either (ie. Early morning and no one on to town is so crowded there are portal storms.)

I haven't had any problems and I have a very similar set-up, only differences are:

Celeron @464
Abit BH6
Soundblaster PCI128

The only problem I have had is that I got kicked to the desktop like the app had minimized. I looked on the systray and there was Asheron's Call still running. I just dbl-clicked and was right back where I left off. Only happened once, I think.

it sounds like you may have a problem with texturing, but i'm not an expert so i can't tell you waht to do

but maybe this insight will help an expert =P
