g200 + win2k + quake3 or elite force

BIG PROBLEM!
i'm running the g200 with a pII-350, nothing overclocked. i've upgraded from win98 to win2k. before the upgrade (or downgrade, whatever) the brightness adjustment worked properly, but afterwards it refused to let me adjust it (within the games, quake3arena and stv: elite force).
it's way much too dark to play.
any recommendations?

another problem that occured:
when changing the screensaver (in win2k) to any openGL-screensaver my computer locks up. even in the screensver-preview).

\r_overBrightBits 0
