  • Sidewinder Game Voice

A few of us got the Sidewinder Game Voice www.gamevoice.com for a LAN party this past weekend. At the party we didn't mess with the chat thing, but we thought that the voice commands for weapon selection was kinda cool. You can just say "Rocket Launcher" and it pulls it out. Say "Flack Cannon" and it draws the weapon. That was all pretty cool (a little slow, but cool just the same). Sunday we spent a little time and got the chat thing working (over the internet). It is basically like talking on the phone while you play. The headset has a built in microphone and you can connect outside of the game to other players. When You go in and play it is like having them on a party line. You can talk to everyone at once or you can select a single person to talk to. It comes with a console that lets you assign players to buttons so that you can hit "all" and speak to everyone or hit their specific button and talk only to them. From the few games that I have played with it I can say that it is VERY cool. It makes playing CTF really fun because you can coordinate with other people on your team without having to stop and type in a message (sure fire way to die in the bigger games). Even in DM it has its advantages. It is way easier to talk smack to your opponents and it's especially fun to hear their reaction when you pop out from behind a wall and hit them with 6 rockets

From what we could tell, even with it running in the background it didn't degrade the game play at all. Even a basic dial up connection was able to accomodate the extra strain on the bandwidth (not a big problem for us LPB's). It has settings for UT (already has the voice commands programmed in for the weapons) as well as 15 other games including QuakeIII, Half Life, Flight Sim, and Starcraft. But, you aren't limited to the commands that are pre-programmed into the software. Anything you can do with the keyboard can be assigned a word so that when you say it the command is preformed.

All total it is a very cool piece of hardware!

Kindness, thanks for the real-life review.

I just read the article in PC Gamer about it. They didn't go into a ton of detail, but basically said the same thing you did, that it was slow in acting on commands. They did say that it does the voice-over-'net well.

Anyone use the other product mentioned, the Game Commander? They said it's much better at the voice recognition thing.

How would you rate it to current favs, Roger Wilco, et al?

      Hah!

Was considering picking one up, but not sure who I'd have to talk with. Now at least you! Sounds fun for MU clan stuff.

What about using Roger Wilco for chat? It's been out a while (popular w/ the Rainbow6 crowd).
