  • Deus-Ex is a resource hog

There were a few instances where the game seemed way too slow...

    ------------------
AMD Athlon 600 MHz, MSI K7 Pro, 256 MB PC133 SDRAM, G400 32 MB DualHead, SB Live! Platinum, FastTrak66, 2 x Maxtor DiamondMax (total 40 GB), Toshiba SD-M1212, etc..
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

I think is always playble while 1024x768 16bpp and high details. I have Win2K and little bit faster machine. Only while Deus caching textures, then is sloved to minimum for 3 or 4 seconds.

BTW: Something is wrong. It is Unreal engine and Unreal is fast enough in 1600x1200 and Deus become unplayable in 1280x1024. Who knows what happen.

Well, it´s true that Deus Ex has a lot of open areas, and thus much more objects to render... also, the memory and processor usage must be bigger due to the complexity of the game.

I sure hope that the games to come don´t follow this trend...

        Hi
On my system (P3-450,i440zx,64 MB PC100 SDRAM,4.3 GB HDD,G200-8MB) there's a lot of disk thrashing even with the patch for Deus Ex installed. I mean, the game runs very smoothly otherwise, but after every few seconds, the hard disk is accessed, thus resulting in overall jerky motion.I wonder why so much of swapping takes place when Unreal runs very smoothly. I'm on PD6.04. Any suggestions to improve performance (and to get rid of these annoying jerks!)?
        Thanks
        Cheers

Definitely your RAM, which isn´t enough, is holding you back - the Unreal Engine is a memory eater, so, if you want to get rid of the jerks, stick in more 64Mb of memory. 128 should do the trick, not only for Deus Ex, but for general computing. You´ll notice a nice boost in your computer´s performance.

If you have a look at the MadOnion website, there is a link to tweaking Deus Ex.

Grab the Benchmark program and run a few comparisons with different settings.

Just by using the latest D3D driver for the game, I shaved 14 seconds off of the time taken to run the benchmark, my lowest frame rate went from 9.21 to 9.77 FPS!! The highest rate went from 44.78 to 47.41, and the average frame rate increased from 26.47 to 27.83.

I used similar settings to in DX to you.

It's this kind of performance that has made me order a GF2 Ultra card today. The G400 MAX just doesn't seem able to cut it anymore

              Deus-Ex is a resource hog

I want to know if you guys agree with me, I mean, it´s based on the UT engine, but runs at half the speed... I´ve installed the D3D patch already.

I have to play at 1024x768, 16 bit, NO detail textures for (almost) fluid gameplay. Framerate varies a lot, there are fast zones and next thing you know, you´re in a slideshow in the middle of a shooting...

              My machine:

              Intel Atlanta 440LX 66Mhz @ 72Mhz bus (Bios 14)
              Intel Celeron 433Mhz @ 468Mhz
              Hyundai 192Mb SDRAM PC100
Western Digital Caviar 4.3 Gb UDMA
Creative Soundblaster PCI128 (driver revision 2)
              Matrox Millennium G400 SH 16Mb SGRAM @147Mhz/196Mhz + attached fan (Powerdesk 6.04)
              Genius desktop speakers + subwoofer
              Microsoft Optical Intellimouse
              Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro
              Standard keyboard
              Standard FDD

              Windows 98 4.10.1998
              IE 5.5
              DirectX 7a

Am I needing a new mobo? (of course I am)

Deus Ex needs only one thing!!!!!!
                    A lot of RAM!!!
When playing Deus Ex is monopolysing more than 128mb of RAM just for him. Put the OS and all the gadgets you have you can understand the problem for most nowadays computers!
I've 458mb of RAM and this game is smooth as silk in 1024x768x32 all details maxed out.
It's not the end of our G400's ;-)

I'd still recommend you to change mobo, 66mhz is not enough bandwith for this game anyway.

I meant to post my sig after my last reply, but as you can see, I have plenty of RAM. My system is no slouch, although I'll agree it's not the fastest either.

The game plays reasonably well, and in most cases I can live with the performance of it, but wouldn't it be nice to run in 32bit colour with the high detail textures and get more than 1 FPS. I think so which is why the G400 is getting the chop. It just doesn't have the muscle any more.

I play in 32 bits with high res textures and it runs flawlessly. I don't see your point.

Bursar, with your system, you should be more than satisfied... maybe it´s not working properly.
I play very well any game with mine, (except Deus Ex, which is a resource hog), let alone if I had your super-system!!!

Vlip, you´ve got the remaining RAM stashed somewhere, cause in your sig there´s only 196...

The card is running at 4x AGP, with side band addressing enabled, but that's about all I can set.

I'll double check my BIOS tonight, but I'm pretty sure the Intel 815 board doesn't have an Apperture size setting.
