Need some Games advice

My favorite RPG-type of all time was Darklands- based in Medieval Germany-great storyline and completely nonlinear until the very end. Kind of an old one from Microprose (took 10 3 1/2 disks), but I haven't seen one that comes even close from a design standpoint.

I concur on the FF recommendations. FF3 (American FF3 = Japanese FF5) was great. FF7 was pretty good. FF8 was DREK. Utterly boring. I felt no attachment to the characters at all, partly because they had no abilities of their own and were totally interchangeable (although the card game was cool).

Fallout 2 _WAS_ much better than Fallout 1, although I enjoyed them both. Ultima9 was SHITE compared to the Ultimas which came before it.

There are some "ok" new RPG's out there. Has anyone tried Summoner? And the Rage of Mages series was interesting, although I hesitate to say "good".

Rage of Mages is not so bad, but if I want just kill something with some story, then I will play Diablo I or II.

btw:Rage of Mages is not easy to play.
