  • Gaming in Windows Millennium

    Has anyone tried this combination:
    Dell Dimemsions 4100
    P3-733
    128MB
    G400 Win ME Driver 6.04.029
    Windows ME 4.90.3000

I had tried 2 games: NFS-PU & Metal gear solid.
Frame rate is about HALF of my previous system, which is P3-600 running Win98SE.

Probably the Win ME driver is not mature yet.

    Regards.

No, I think you need to look elsewhere for the answer to your problem. The drivers for Win98 work just fine under WinME. I have both and I have noticed no difference in performance between Win98SE and WinME with the current Matrox drivers. One question that I would ask is, is your WinME installation from a clean install or was it done as an upgrade with Win98 still on the system? I have heard of alot of people having problems with WinME when it is not done as a clean install. Also try to give us a little bit more info on your system, ie. IRQ settings, are you OCing, you know basic things, and we will see what we can do.

      Joel:

Furthermore, now that I have installed Windows ME, gameplay seems smoother... is it my imagination or ME is a little bit better for gaming? I´ve seen some benchmarking somewhere on the net and ME was always 1-4 fps faster than Windows 98...
Drifting away from just gaming, the whole operating system seems faster, too... even the disk defragmenter, for example.

Alec ... your speed improvements may be simply due to a fresh install.

            Thanks for the reply.

The drivers are d/l from matrox web site.
System is brand new from Dell so i suppose they should have done a clean install.
            Config:
            P3-733
            Intel 815e chipset
            1 x 128MB PC133 CL3 SDRAM
            15G ATA66 Quantum Hdd
            48x LG cdrom
            3Com 3c905c 10/100 NIC
            Diamond fireport 40 SCSI
            Sblive
            G400 32Mb DH

Originally it came with a ATI rage pro 16MB but i removed the drivers and taken out the card.
Now G400 is using IRQ 11, not shared with anything else. System not OC(and not able to OC).

            Regards.

Don´t trust that, do a clean install yourself. Format your drive and install from scratch.

#1: Dell can't install drivers to save its life.

#2: If your ATI card was integrated, it might take a bit of fiddling in the BIOS to turn it off, maybe even a jumper!

#3: ATI drivers are notorious for lingering long past their removal.

SO the verdict is... clean install.

                  <sigh>
I was hoping not to do a clean install. It's a lousy way to spend a weekend.

Probably i'll have to stick to ATI for the moment, don't have the time to clean install until christmas holiday.

                  Thanks for the response.

                  Regards.

                      Hey Gurm:

#3: ATI drivers are notorious for lingering long past their removal.
I think they are going to linger anyway, 1 second after uninstalling them and for 300 years, if you don´t delete the remains...

WARNING: THESE LINGERING DRIVERS ARE GOING TO SELF-DESTRUCT LONG PAST THEIR REMOVAL
