Win2k/D3D/Opengl+game performance

Hey everyone, I just upgraded to Win2k (a great decision by the way) after hearing from everyone how it isnt a good OS for gaming, and from others RAVING about game compatibility and performance, and found out myself, after much debate, that it indeed is a great OS for apps AND gaming. My problem then is this: why do games seem to run slower now in win2k then they did on 98se? I swear i get LESS fps in almost all of my games, (UT, Sacrifice, Star Trek Elite Force) and the mouse response seems to be a little less crisp. Now, in win98 i was using ps2rate (a great little prog btw) so that made my mouse smoooth. In win2k there is an option for this, but you can only go up to 100hz...about half of the 200hz of ps2rate. So, of course my mouse seems slower. Anyone have any comments? Notice the same thing on your system?

Specs P3-450, 128mb, 16meg g400, SB Live! Value, GigabyteBX6 m/b, 13gb Quantum Fireball hd
PS: I recently installed DX8 for win2k, anyone notice a diff w/dx8+newest drivers?

First off slap at least another 128 megs in there, Win2K is a mem hog and you'll see much better proformance all around. (will still be a few FPS slower than Win98 tho)

I doubt your problem is related to PS2 sampling rate speed. (I have used PS2rate also
More like swapping out to the HD, due to insufficient memory.

DX8 does improve proformance quite a bit in W2k.

Hey, Greebe. I have always more fps with W2k !!! 8-))) Have a true, more memory needed and DX8 is better.
