Civilization - by far the best game created to date.

3 Card Brag's quite high up there too, but that's only if we're not restricting to computer games!!

My own feeling is you need to break this down by game type.

Who can forget the old "Pool of Radiance", the first of the gold box series.

For shooters, the original Castle Wolfenstein 3D, the FIRST of the 1st person shooters. The gameplay was great, and you had a real reason to go around shooting everything that moves. Since that time, there's never been much of a point to the other shooters.

Also, who can forget the original Wizardry trilogy(Wiz 1-3). You could import your characters, and go onward. Those were great.

The Bard's Tale trilogy, like the wizardry games, but with better graphics and features.

For recent RPGs, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, and Baldur's Gate 2 rank up there for story, fun, and that feeling you had a choice of how things would go in the game.

Many don't remember Freespace 2, the best of the space combat games that have come out in my opinion.

And yes, for strategy, Civ 2. Take it what it's worth, but ALL of these games deserve mention, and to say that a shooter is better than a space combat game, or that one TYPE of game is better than the others isn't being realistic. To be honest, while you may praise the shooters for gameplay and graphics, and overall game engine quality, as a game, or something to do, they arn't all that different from a bunch of 8-year-olds throwing dirt bombs at each other at a construction site. Some may say that's not fair, but I out-grew that sort of thing a LONG time ago, and it still amazes me that so many people play these games, without seeing the similarities.

The game coming back on my desktop lately is old Settlers 2, mission pack included.
Others I play alot are NFS: Porsche, GP3, Star Trek: Armada, Starfleet Command and once in a while when I'm really bored Freecell

Waiting for STV: Elite Forces to drop on my doormat.

It has to be either Planescape Torment or Fallout2 because of the great plot, history and freedom how to play the game.

Funny how most of the favorite games in here are games released in the last three years or so. When I think of the really great games i think of games like:

Giana sisters, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, GPC Fix Drive, Nuclear War, Rodland, Big Business, Rockstar ate my hamster....etc.

Man I miss my Amiga and my C64!
These games gave me more sleepless nights than Q3A, UT, NFS.... etc. ever will.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

aaahahahaha. I remember Nuclear War. Great game!

Also, to whoever mentioned Bard's Tale, good call. That game (and the sequel) ate up so much of my free time, it wasn't even funny.

For now, nothing has been able to steal my attention from TFC.

Anyone know where I can pick up a Tron Discs game? God would I love to have that stand-up in my apartment...

Mech2, 3, and Flight sims. Oh and 8 player lan Duke Nukem. Boy we wasted whole days on that. Hehehe... And of course X-wing stuff. They should use the engine from Alliance and re-do all the other ones. They should also re-do the original Mech2/GBL with Mech3 PM engine as well. Playing for the clans absoulutely kicked ass! So cool. And in the old(good?) 386 days, I played a hell of alot of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat and AOE. And SWOTL. Descent 1 was a total hoot too. There were alot others but these really slayed me.
