  • games on win2k

I got some questions about gaming on this OS.

1- When I run HL (without any patch & addon) the OS says that I need at least the SP3.... but I thought that the last one on win2k was SP1. Is is a bug in the game that can be corrected with a patch?

2- I ran Rune on my win98 at 800*600*32 and the performance was horrible... even the first time the game started at 640*480*32 it was slow. When I tried it on my win2k I played smooth at 800*600*32.... it was a little faster than on my win98 at 800*600*16. Is there any good reason for it?

3- I installed the SP1, is there any other patch that would be useful?

HL runs fine on Win2k (assuming you mean Half-Life).

It's quite picky though. I occaisionally get 'HL.exe has caused errors and will be shut down' message whilst playing online.

The main thing is that you have all of the Half-Life patches installed (which you'll need for online play anyway).

HL ran fine pre-SP1 on Win2k with the game patches as well.

As well as SP1, visit WindowsUpdate and get the latest Compatibility updates. There is meant to be something in the first one for HL, but it didn't actually seem to make any difference.

I can't quote on Rune as I haven't played it.

Any idea on why HL is going south ?? I get the same thing in 2000 and 98 OGL and DX. I'll be fine for a while then boom kicks me out

        HL/TFC runs superb on my system: P3-850, 256MB, G450 32MB.

EDIT: I run win2k as well.

Post some specs and we'll see if there's anything you can do to improve performance.

Sorry for the delay, I had problem with my computer & my ISP...

I've installed the patch that came with the Opposing forces and HL began to work. I've played at 1024*768 in OpenGl.... it was not too bad.

I will change my mobo in 2-3 days for a asus CUSL2 to see if that correct my crashing prob.

First make sure you have your specific monitor selected in windows (NOT plug and play).

Next make sure you have dualhead disabled, next goto display properties/advanced/monitor settings.

There you can tweak you current display mode, and all the others you plan to use. I always set all the modes I will be using, and save it as a customization file so all I have to do is load it if I uninstall old drivers for some reason.

Still the same bug, I've had it installed under the monitor tab... it's a viewsonic P810-4 (but the only one in the list was P810-3). The I checked for the Dualhead and it was disabled. Then I clicked on the ajust this display mode and he said "You have to select a monitor under the monotor tab". I really don't understand that one.

                  Goto display properties/advanced/monitor

uncheck hide modes, and then hit apply.

Then in that same box, click properties, and then click on the driver tab, then click on update drivers. Click next, then check the box that says "Display drivers etc. etc.", click next, and find the monitor that most closely resembles yours, click on it and apply. Close out of display properties, go back into monitor settings and it should work.

                      Hmmm...that's weird.

Try selecting a Matrox customization file by choosing "Select customizations from matrox list" Or something to that effect.

If that doesn't work, let me know which display modes you want set to what, and I will see if I can't make a customization file for you, and I will post it here for you to load.

It keep saying the same message error with all buttons on the monitor setting tab.
I want to change my refresh rate of 1024*768*16 & 1024*768*32 for 133Hz
                        1280*1024*16 & 1280*1024*32 for 101Hz
                        800*600*16 & 800*600*32 for 150Hz I think I can set it higher but I don't find the book.
                        there's also 1600*1200*16 & 32 that should be set at 85Hz.

What could be the problem that causes my PC to refuse to let me change my refresh rates?

I'll just create a new topic in the Matrox Hardware forum since the gaming forum isn't the best place for that.
