  • Quake 3 Linux faster than Windows with new driver... sshots here!

if any of you have tried out the utah-glx driver on this site you would know that they are not really accelerated, even at fastest settings i would get at MOST 10fps.... so i compiled my own one, with newer utah-glx source... the tgz package can be downloaded here for now.. http://www.ematic.com/nehal/files/glxMesa-20001110.tgz
if you dont have slackware or installpkg, then just unpack to your / directory..

off course its compatible with all GL games, i just used quake3 as an example...

here are my screenshots, first one is windows, followed up by the linux one... all are in default Normal settings... with nothing changed.... note the image quality difference, which is better??... u decide...

The windows screens look better to me. It looks like there are lighting issues with the glx driver.

hmmm...ok... i wasnt sure what its really supposed to look like....

well obviously if u have a P3, even a 50% increase in speed wouldnt really be noticed, and probably u would prefer the quality in windows...

but this is more for you ppl who have crappy k6's... like me....and dont mind the slight quality difference

Sure, the windows shots are brighter, but not nesessarily better. Also, judging from the hitpoints/ammo both winows and Linux are in 16bit color.

Was the gamma up to the same level as the windows in game settings???(not that I've played with it, but I'm pretty sure that it is there) Whats the resolution that the shots were taken in??

I am not talking about the darkness. Look at the light sources (the lamps), and there should be lighting as a result. In the linux shots, there are none, in the windows shots there are. This would definitely speed things up to have it not render lighting.

there is lighting, if u look carefully, its just not as much in the glx version, and unless you look carefully you really cant notice the difference while you are playing

also, both shots on normal settings on heavy detail scenes, if i put it on fastest, i get an average of ~25fps in windows and ~45fps with glx, and i doubt that the fix for the lighting would slow it down to the windows level...

I'm with Matt. I can't imagine drivers or the OS being the bottleneck on Nehal's system. Extreme FPS increases within the same resolution and bit depth are typically connected to the disabling of certain CPU-intensive tasks. Disabling Dynamic Lighting on a CPU-limited systems should give you a nice performance spike.

Is the Dynamic Lights function enabled (and working properly) in the Linux version?

hmmm... now that i think of it, dynamic lighting it is quite cpu intensive... (i know that from the flashlights in counterstrike) ....maybe thats the reason why it runs so fast on the linux version...

can you tell me how to disable dynamic lighting on the windows version?, that would be so great if i can get it working the same speed, i wouldn't hafta change OS's every time i wanna play quake 3 cos i use windows 95 as my primary OS...

I'm not positive, but in your Quake\base3\ directory find q3config.cfg.

                  Search for seta r_dynamiclight "1"

Change the 1 to 0 (zero).

                  Merry Christmas.

We can do it the easy way as well. From the main menu:

                    Go to Setup
                    Go to Game Options
Toggle the Dynamic Lights option from On to Off.
