Just got myself a copy of UT

I have never had any experience with UT (besides the demo). What should I know? How do mods work? What's needed to play on the Matrox server?

Also, what version should I use? I've read here that some have better performance...?

Oh, and I must practice with the Air Hammmer

Welcome to the group! There is actually so much that you will hvae to learn that it can't possibly all be explained here. This game has grown into a MONSTER. My UT folder is 1.2 GB and growing. You will add maps, mods, skins, and other cool stuff. The latest patch is v436, and I haven't heard many complaints about it. You will also have to have the "Bonus Pack". (It has a bunch of extra maps and stuff.) They are both available from http://www.unrealtournament.com/downloads/.
Other than that just hang in there and play . Don't get discouraged! I have been playing for almost a year now and I still rarely win. It's kinda like golf, there's always someone out there that can beat you (and that you can beat). The main difference would be that SMEARING someone with an air hammer is way more fun than sinking a 2 foot putt.

Have Fun! See ya on line!

To get what you need to play on the MGI server, visit [MU]'s home page, and check the UT files area.

And BTW the IP for the Matrox game server is 204.50.135.80 and if it ask for a password use murc. There seems to be only bots there most of the time anymore but it is a good place to practice.

Here's one more very useful piece of info: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum4/HTML/004206.html

Since we tend to play on many different servers, this thread will tell you how we typically find each other regardless of where we are currently playing.

You pretty much will need the latest UT version since most servers out there are using it, and it's not backward compatible with earlier versions.

            Thanks for the links, guys!

Is it possible to take a D3DDrv.dll file from another version and use it with the current one? If not, I'll stick to 4.36.

Didn't download any maps, skins yet. Just got 4.36 patch and the bonus packs. Another question: What are UMODs?

                      LS,

umods are self extracting files, so if you download a new map with new textures, sounds, etc., and execute it, it puts all the files in the correct folders. I've had problems in the past with umods.....quite a drag if you spend an hour downloading stuff and then can't use it. One problem I found is that umod does not like spaces in the name of your UT directory. Mine was Unreal Tournament....that was a no-no. Changed it to UnrealTournament, and no problems. Anyways, I've never had trouble with non-umod files, so that's what I download if I can.

And after playing with you last night, I think you're hustling us.

                      John (aka Dr_John[MU])

P.S. To get better at playing against Beezer, I set all the bots to skill-level inhuman and make them all use the shock rifle. Evidently this training hasn't helped me much.
