really bad g450-performaance

Hi There,

i have some problems with my g450...i just have about 1500 3dmarks in the default benchmark and every game stuckles(dont know the word), even tony hawk in 640*480!!

My System is

Either im an god damned idiot or my matrox doesnt run at the speed it could run, i installed all new drivers (6.21.003), flashed the graphic-card bios (1.3 - 23), flashed my mainboard-bios and installed the via 4in1 drivers, cardruns in agp 4x mode, and powerstrip saysme that:

G450 core clock speed should be 125mhz as normal G400!
Try to dump your board "PINS" and verify the clock speed.

You cannot rely on what PS is telling you your speeds are.
Only the latest beta of PS works at all on G450, and even with that version the clocks speeds it reports are not necesarily correct.

Either the core freq was right or wrong, i brought it back to the shop, think i will look for a g400 max...

Not all G450 have the same core frequency.. I think some OEM SDRAM models have a lower frequency???

Good Going Armagon. The Max should suit your perfectly. The 64Bit Bus is a perfomance killer on the G450 performance. Had a TNT2 M64 before my present G400. It flew very fast in 16Bit Color, but in 32Bit, it ran like a 3 Legged Dog. 32Bit Color was too much information to squeeze thru the straw like 64Bit Bus Line. I think that was some of your problems with the G450. One thing that makes me mad about Matrox. They make a great product, but cater to Office Buildings before they cater to Gamers.

The TNT2 M64 is a horrible card. Saw one yesterday at a friend´s house and at 1024x768 32-bit, the Windows desktop fonts were ghosting and flickering at a 85Hz resolution. It´s ridiculous.
Again, yesterday, another friend of mine asked me my opinion about a new computer that he´s buying. Guess what? He WAS going to buy a M64. Now he´s going for a G450 16Mb. It´s mostly for Office, Pagemaker and Photoshop work.

TNT2/M64 does suck. I've taken over a dozen tech support calls in the past week where that was the culprit.

afaik, there must be something wrong in your system setup since you don't have a GART manager running ...

"GART manager - n/a" should be taken to means "(info) Not Available" rather than "not installed"... Since DX reports 78MB available using DIME, a GART manager has to be properly installed.

The 62MHz engine clock is spurious since the report is from software that predates the G450, but you can calculate the correct number from the memory clock.

Since the graphics clock does not appear on any external pins, it can't be directly measured the way the memory clock can. But it looks like Matrox sets the G450 engine clock to run at 4/5th the memory clock. That would make it ~130MHz in the case of your card (G450s come in several clock flavors).

In short, everything looks OK...
