  • Drastic Speed Drop After Upgrade

    I have a G450.

When running on a no-name BX board with a Celeron 466, I got 27.7 fps average running the UCGuideDemo1 stress demo on Quake3A. This was using their config VisualFPS3 @ 1024x768.

I have just inserted an Abit K7TA mobo with a Duron 800 on it (should be a ton faster than the Celeron 466). It has 320MB of PC100 memory in it at the moment.

My FPS using the same drivers as before has now dropped drastically to 21fps in the same demo.

I understand the G450 will be the bottleneck and I expected to see either no or marginal speed increase. What I did not expect is this massive drop.

Is there something I need to re-configure to get things back the way they were (or better?).

I used to always run Intel chips, got my fingures burned on a K5 and didn't buy AMD again until now... I'm hoping I didn't make a big mistake.

    Thanks

Hmm.. where can I get this demo?

    Some things here though :

Did you install the latest 4-in-1 drivers for the via mobo chipset?

Are you using W2k? If so, go back to the 5.20 powerdesk drivers. The 5.33 disable agp texturing on via motherboards for some reason.....

Get the demo from the 'Frame rate and visual tweaks' section of

      http://ucguides.savageuniverse.com/Q...ake3Guide.html

You can get the visual configs there too... If you put them in baseq3 you can

/exec VisualFPS3 (for example). restart q3 and re run the demo

I'm running WinME with Powerdesk Display Drivers 6.23.042 (I think that was the latest on the Matrox website)

Initially, DXDiag said that AGP was disabled (DX7.1) so I installed the 4-in-1 update and now its enabled but it didn't bring the timedeom framerate back up at all.

This upgrade is giving me grief... Everything else on this computer (e.g. Povray) is just soooo much faster than before; Apart from this niggle!

Thanks for your input so far

try pcilist to check proper install,
        sissoft sandra to test more
In bios, set agp to 4x, disable shadowing, set force 4 way interleave {or something similar}(in 1st screen)
        amd k62-350 @400 - tyan trinity 100AT 1590s - 128mb sdram - wd 10gb 5400/u33 - g200 8mb sgram agp - sb16pro isa - Realtek 8029 NIC -
