  • G400 to G400MAX/ G450?

    Hi all,

I'm just about to upgrade my computer and with no sign of the G8xx series on the horizon I was wondering if I would see any significant performance increase going from my G400 32Mb to a G400MAX or G450 32Mb (DDR)?

For all of those who are wondering I'll be taking my processor from a PIII-450MHz to an Athalon 1Gh.

I guess the processor upgrade is going to swamp any performance increase from a new graphics card. But I thought I'd ask, just in case.

    Thanks.

    Phil.

ever thought of simply o/clocking that G400 to max level & saving your cash for the purchase of the "new arrival".

The G450 will most likely equal to or a bit slower than what you have now... difference between a G400 and a Max...I'd think it would be better just to OC your G400.

You should see roughly a double in proformance over your previous processor where the G400 is concerned!

I was wondering the exact same thing, have you taken a vow of silence ?

Just thought Rags was trying to make a point (.)

Actually, I've been getting ready to upgrade my cpu as well. This is good to hear that the performance should be substantial going from a PIII 450 which I also currently have. My mobo bios will accept up to a PIII 850 which I figure I should be able to OC to about 1Gh.

If I was you I wouldn't worry about the video card upgrade yet. You are going to see a good increase in performance with the CPU upgrade. Also look into doing what some of the others have suggested about OCing the G400 you have and save your money for just a little while longer.

I didn't think that an upgrade would be worth it in light of the CPU.

I'm not a big lover of overclocking things my machine runs quite hot what with all the other stuff in there! (1 SCSI HDD, 256Mb, DVD, CD-RW, LS-120, S/C, NIC, ISDN NIC, SCSI Adapter!)

But, if I'm willing to take a look at any sites that gives good overclocking advice.

                    Ta.

                      Hey Phil,

you already found the best site for OCing ...

just do a search and you'll find plenty of threads covering the topic.

I had my G400 running at MAX clockspeeds for more than a year and it still is in a friend's system.

                      Look here for example ...

Go for it, it isn't rocket science and the benefit is worth a try.

And on top of that Matrox provides it's own tweaking tool to help you out.

I didnt get much, if any speed increase in games with a CPU upgrade. WEnt from P3 450 to P3 600 to P3 750 to P3 1000 and only gained about 3fps in Quake3.

New drivers alone probably account for that.
