So we agree that lower latency gives a player an advantage. O.K. this doesn't make you a cheater (I was joking after all) but I do feel its skewed in that your not purely competing on skill and/or random chance. I suppose its no different than in car racing where its crucial to have a rich sponsor affording you the best in automotive technology and parts and a top notch pit crew. In that way, on-line gaming is more like real life and who said life is fair?!

You do realize that servers can be set up to make all pings more even, right? This means that everyone would have cruddy ping response, so the playing field would be leveled a bit more.

Do you know where I could find some HPB Q3A servers? I'm located in Silicon Valley.

xortam, if I connect to a US server, I would most likely be a HPB

but low ping doesn't mean that much in q3a... there's also the percentage of PL, and the fluctuation of ping. If your ping regularly fluctuates over 50ms, then it's very difficult to rail people. And cl_timeNudge can do very good prediction when used properly, giving a 100ms ping person as good chance of winning as a 60ms ping player with using cl_timeNudge

And I also wholeheartedly agree that cheaters are really spoiling it for themselves and even more for others in multiplayer games. Although I've been accused of cheating more than once myself, but most of the time when those people spectate the person they accuse of cheating some time, they stop whining

dZeus: That is the truth! I was convinced that a guy was cheating in a game. I didn't say anything, bailed on the game, and entered as a spectator. I soon realized that the guy was just really, really.........REALLY good. He knew where all of the items were in the maps I watched him play. He knew where all of the hidden power ups, weapons, and armor were located. As a result he was amped up all the time with 199 health and 150 armor. I couldn't figure out why I could nail him with several rockets and he wouldn't die. I learned a ton by watching him play 3 games (all of which he dominated).

As for the ping issue. The ping certainly DOES make a difference. If you and an opponent have identical reaction times, come face to face, and fire at the same time, the lower ping will get the kill EVERY time. I know that in UT when you have a high ping you have to lead the guy a good bit with your weapon to score a hit. Forget the sniper rifle all together in 150 plus ping games.

edit* Back to the cheating thing. Snake-Eyes and I have been accused of cheating by way of helping eachother out in a DM game on a public server. They thought that we were the top two because we were taking it easy on each other. A quick check of the stats after the game revealed that we killed each other almost twice as many times as we killed the other guys in the room. What the guys accusing us didn't know is that I would pass 3 other people to get a shot at Snake-Eyes (and I found that Snake was doing the same). People that start calling you a cheater because they get stomped make me chuckle.

My pings are usually around 240 and can fluctuate wildly. At best, I can find a few servers at around 130-160 but they usually have too many players. Needless to say, this doesn't make it too fun for me. I tried playing with cl_timenudge before with no luck but I'll check it out again. Sigh ... I don't know why I even try.

Ping matters. I play CS and like to keep the ping around 50-75, I don't like anything over 125 because it makes aiming laggy. Some of the servers here I average under 20 (my record is 7).

Cheaters are lame. I'm starting to play CS on www.punkbuster.org servers, since then I don't have to wonder if a cheater killed me, and newbies tend to stay away from those servers too.

My friends and I get accused of cheating a lot.

Some people have lower ping/faster comps, some have autoaiming. If you have a problem with it Rags, play on private/protected servers...
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

autoaiming is not comparable to having a different machine.
I'm on that server to compete with others, to see who can play among the best within the confines of the game. All you little script kiddies can bite me. You're off of any server I have control over, and I'll get you booted anywhere else I can. If you have a problem with that, go play where you're wanted, which is rare.

Fortunatly, Valve came out with a cheat patch to keep those lamers out.
                        </font>
Kruzin, you do know that the first patch that Valve released to address this issue kicks legit players that lag out (basically any sort of ping fluctuation and you get kicked). The newer patch improves the situation, but doesnt resolve it completely. I've heard rumours that it can cause people to lag out, and so get kicked too.

Loosing a few legit players is a small cost compared to the large number of lamerz it keeps out.

Now that I'm operating a UT server (with CSHP), I'm seeing some people getting refused access because of something called a "funbot". Sometimes, the kickee will apparently disable the funbot and then rejoin successfully and play.

Any opinions on what I should say to or do about these people? I told the last one who came back that he would get banned if he tried to get on my server with the funbot again.

                            Appropriate? Too mild?

PS This is not a question to bring out the flames against cheaters. This is a question, the answer to which will help me shape policy on my server. Thank you for serious replies.

I am a big proponent of IMMEDIATELY banning people that try to enter a game with a cheat enabled. I don't want to play with people that have that attidude whether they have a cheat enabled or not. The ones that are using these things generally turn out to be trash talking idiots anyway. If all of the servers would band together and do this it would act as a deterent. As it is the guy probably just turned it off and played as usual. Let him get kick/banned from a few of his favorite servers and he will not be as likely to try to cheat in the future.
