  • G400 same performance of Savage4?

    I just upgraded to a G400 Dual-Head from a S3 Savage4 Xtreme video card, but I didn't see much improvement:

    Quake2 demo1 640x480 120 fps
    Quake2 demo1 800x600 88 fps
    Quake3 demo001 640x480 59 fps (32-bit color/textures/max settings/bilinear)

Those scores are almost dead even with my Savage4 card! Is the performance of these two cards really that similiar or did I install something wrong? Also I get the same fps with the Quake3 demo001 using trilinear filtering with my Savage card, but it goes down 10 fps if I enable it on the G400.

My setup is a C600@900/256 megs RAM. Please let me know if those scores sound about right for my system!

BTW I have to admit 2D quality seems a whole lot nicer

Welcome to the brighter side, Sir Gwynz !

I dunno about the Savage, but the G400 does real tri-linear mipmapping and thus takes a noticable performance hit. TNT-2 for example faked it by using dithering combined with bi-linear filtering and therefore they were always faster in tri-linear filtering.

IF you have some scores with bi-linear, set the G400 to same settings and try again.

Another option is to overclock your card and gain more performance ...

Just do a search on overclock G400 Q3 or something to that extend.

If you run into problems or have any furtehr questions, you know where to ask.

    Cheers,

Try higher resolutions like 800x600 at 32bit or 1024x768 at 32bit... your G400 will blow Savage4's crippled 64bit memory interface.

That´s correct. Even with a G400/Savage4/TNT2 class video card you´ll be more limited by cpu than the video card at these resolutions.

Also make sure you have the latest drivers for the G400 and your VIA motherboard (if applicable).

Try the TurboGL drivers as well, as they often give a sizable speed increase in speed in Q3 (but with the trade-off of bugs).

You do not need the turbogl if you're using the latest drivers!

i dont use the tgl, the improvement isnt worth it. 6.50 rocks and is easy to handle. and the savage4 has a nicer and sharper image compared to the tnt2.

but in 1024*768*32 this thing is sucking.
