  • Serious Sam crashes in 98se with g400

The header says it all. I have no issues with Unreal or Q3. Anyone running this game successfully? If so, what driver version are you running and what tweaks do you have either for the card or game?

My system is an 800 Athlon, MSI 6195, AMD Irongate chipset, 384megs ram, DX8, running at 640x480. I've been reading a lot of messages on this forum and elsewhere, without finding a cure.

BTW, I noticed that a lot of people run at higher resolutions for games. Why do they do that?

    thanks for any help!

Hmm, because games look better at high res ?

I've only tried the Sam tech demo 1, and it played well for about 5 minutes, but then dumped me to the desktop

"That's right fool! Now I'm a flying talking donkey!"

I don't understand what you mean with your question, "because games look better at high res?"

My experience with higher resolutions means that screen objects get smaller with each increment. Seems to me that it would be more difficult locating and hitting targets when you make them smaller. No?

Everything stays the same size measured by the monitor even as you increase the resolution. The top picture is at 400x300, the bottom at 1600x1200.

Thanks for the screen shots! I can certainly see the difference. The only thing that looks smaller is the crosshairs.

After reading the other post, I fired up Q3 and played with the resolutions up to 1024. I didn't notice the substantial difference in details like your screen shots demonstrated, I was watching how the changes affected game play, so I may have missed such details.

I'll play around with it some more to see if I like higher res play.

          thanks!

I used a rather extreme example, normally you wouldn't use resolutions that low or that high (at least not with a G400 ). And yes, in many games stuff like crosshairs and other "HUD" stuff will get smaller the higher you go.

              ...but it was great example

The size of the cross hair reflects the resolution of movement as u move the mouse...which means it will actually be easier to aim at high res =)

I'm running Serious Sam on Win2k and the 5.31 drivers without any problem. But then again, its Win2k and not Win98. Does it crash randomly or at the same place each time? IRQ list?

back to the original topic ...

there's an option to load addons, choose default gfx setup (or whatever the named it) and see if it still crashes on your system.

                  Cheers,

Now, it crashes at precisely the same place, while loading level 4, when it is loading entities. Always the same error message with engine.dll. It crashes at the same spot using safe mode... I can play the first 3 levels without any problems at all...

I've installed the game several times now. The current install is without the addons, I think.. But, I'll try this and see what happens.

                    Thanks!

the just call 'em addons, but those are scripts that can be executed from within the game ...

Btw, are you talking about Serious Sam 1 or 2 ?

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I'll try that out tonight. The CD I have is RC2, which I assume to mean release candidate 2. Is that what you mean by SS1 or 2?

                        thanks!

I was talking about the public tests that Croteam released, but now I see you're talking about the retail version, right ?

Hmmmm, I'm past level 4 without a glitch (800x600 - again, it's on Win2k). I'm working late today, so I can't check what level it is, but I get major slowdowns once I go inside the building on the Oasis level -- but thats another story.

As I said, maybe an IRQ list would help. What's your AGP aperture?

On both Win2k and WinME It plays for a while, then hard locks the machine. It's not in the same place at all. Oh well, I'll figure all that crap out later. Perhaps time to get back to playing Deus Ex.
