  • Is Tribes 2 too slow for a Matrox G400?

I am thinking of getting Tribes 2, but...

I have a Pentium III 600 Mhz with 256 MB, Windows 98, DirectX 8a, a Matrox G400 (non-MAX) dualhead 32 MB, with @Home cable modem, SB Live! card, etc.

Is this game choppy/slow with everything on? I am planning to max out at 1024x768. If I must, I will sacrifice 32-bit to 16-bit colors. I am on a tight budget to get a new video card. I am still happy with my G400.

I look forward to recieiving feedbacks on this. Thanks.

No way in hell ur gonna run at 1027x768 with everything on. With that rig, ur gonna be playing at no higher than 800x600 with most or all eye-candy off. It's still gonna look ok, but not as beautiful as a video card that has T&L and enough fill rate to do all the eye-candy.

But don't play the game to watch the scenerely, you play the game to play the game.

Ignore Donnyboy on this one, he's been beaten by nVidia's PR stick. Hehe, "only T&L will really help." Please.

I don't know what your performance will be though. I might try in on my machine soon, borrow a friend's copy (you can't do much without the CD key).

actually what you should try is setting the 3d model setting low since you dont need to see the pretty costumes when your fragging away...my copy should be arriving in the mail soon so ill see what i can do with it.. i played tribes 1 and loved it so this should be an improvment

I agree 100%. If T&L helps so much please enlight me why Tribes 2 is much faster on a KyroII than on a GTS.

Regardless of the reasoning, I agree with the Evil one. I have a PIII 1100, 512 MB ram, GeForce2 GTS, etc, and turning down several of the settings, Tribes 2 is playable at 1024X768 32 bit color; but with all the eye candy, no way....suddenly it's not a game but a slide show. I do have my G400Max in my other rig (PIII500), so maybe I'll check Tribes 2 on if I get a chance.

never heard that t&l improves visual quality .....

if its too choppy try lower res. in a hard fight you dont recognize that difference that much.

Where did I say T&L helps soo much and improved visual quality? I simply stated that T&L improves performance, paticularly on slower CPU's. Yes I know no games at the moment make use of T&L for higher rpoly counts. Yes I know that T&L is only effective at low res, and actually hinders performance at higher res. But I never said otherwise, now did I?

I'm tired of ppl on this forum trying to cut me up, whenever I dont phrase things perfectly. I wasn't rude, nor incorrect in my post above. So leave me alone. I'm a matrox loyalist first and foremost. My opinion is not swayed by Nvidia propoganda, as I dislike their products and their recent tactics against ST Micro.

I'm not the most knowledgable person in these forums, and I dont' claim to be. I'm just posting what I know (or think). If I'm damn wrong say so, but stop trying to cut me up.

EvilDonnyBoy is full of it. I play Tribes2 at 1024X768 using the default settings the game set up for me (16bit), and it plays fine.

I think ED has some good points, actually. I can barely play T2 on my setup, and I can't even try regular multiplayer.....

Jeez, gimme some slack rags. Vanguardian1 says he agrees with some of my points, and somewhat disagrees with what u just said. Now are you gonna say he's "full of it" too? Or do I get special treatment.

Nah, because he said he couldn't do it with his machine, not that it couldn't be done, there is a difference you know.

                          back on topic:

T2 runs fine on my system as long as i don't turn everything max. i haven't tweaked T2 for my G400MAX yet, but i think a g400 can do good job with T2 as long as you keep the res low. Only problem are the scenes outside.

if i'm playing at 640x480 i'm getting about 25-40 fps outside and 80-100 fps inside. When i step inside a building the fps is so much higher i get the feeling i'm walking faster.
i'm still trying to level the fps out, but i don't have the patience to tweak the settings, because the game is too addictive.

I'm a max texture person myself.

I don't care for fancy lights though.
