  • Slowdowns in CS with flashlight or lightning

    Hey guys,

I get a major drop in FPS if someone turns on the flashlight in CounterStrike. Also whenever the lighting flashes on de_aztec, my FPS drops to under 10.

Smoke and grenade exlosions also cause slowdowns, but this is a known problem I think.

    Any clues?

    TIA,
    Rahul

I get some slowdown too, when someone turns on their flashlight, but it's more like 5fps. You could turn off the dynamic lighting (r_dynamic 0), but then the lights are visible.

I found that when I bought more ram the slow downs went, same for slow downs with smoke grens.
I know it's not that helpful to tell you to upgrade your computer, everyone knows that helps, but it's all I can offer.

I don't know if that helps, because i am not experiencing anything like this. But if memory size is involved try the -heapsize command in the link to CS.

E.g. add -heapsize 32000 to the command line. This forces HL to utilize 32 MB of RAM minimum. This usually helps if you are running short on memory or have a lot of tasks running.

        regards

I get the exact same problem too - with heapsize 96000. That should be more than enough memory for CS.

It also happens when using the night goggles in the dark.

I have 256 MB, don't tell me I need more than that for CS

I'll try the heapsize thing though. Somehow I get the feeling that its related to my SBLive! VIA combo. Uppity -- what are your system specs?

Hmm, lets see if I can remember (I'm at work atm and my PC is obviously at home)

              Duron 750
              128 Ram
              Gigabyte GA71-XE4 Mobo
              SB live value
              Maxtor 40G hd
              G400 32M DH
              Cable-modem + Ethernet card
I really can't remember which driver versions I am using, I'll have to check at home.

I thought the SBlive at one point but when I think about - Yes the Aztec lightning has sound associated to it, but leaving the flashlight on or using night goggles has the same problem - even when there is absolutely no sound being played so it seems to be more graphic-related.

All I really see in common here are the Duron, G400 and SBLive (I can't see the HD having anything to do with it)

Oh yeah, running in Windows 98. I can't remember if I'm running HL in D3D or OGL mode. I'm pretty sure its OGL though.

                  Uppity,

Our systems have more in common than you think - basically the troublesome VIA + SBLive! combo. Hve you tried the lates patch from VIA at www.viahardware.com?

I hate to tell you this but it is not the VIA + SBLive problem.

Prior to installing my matrox card i played thorugh all the games and apps on my system one last time before installing the g450.

Using the 5.32 drivers whenever lightning or the flashlight was activated I would get a slight stutter or pause.

Since then i ave installed the 5.52 drivers but I have not played it yet.

Prior to putting i nthe matrox cards i did not get those stutters which leads me to believe it is a driver problem with matrox.

No stutters at all here, so I don't believe it's a driver issue.

Anyone know how ACPI affects IRQ sharing? I mean, is Windows still using the same BIOS-level interrupts for the cards? My SBlive! is sharing an interrupt with my TV tuner right now according to the BIOS. Does this still imply sharing at some level even when using ACPI? AFAIK ACPI is an abstraction of the BIOS level stuff, but only to applications -- the card-motherboard interface may still be using the old IRQ system.

Well, that's just what it drops to during the light flashes. Its usually around 60+ fps for me but below 10 when the lights come on.
