  • HL v1.1.0.6 with -32bpp & 1024x768 = sluggish

Has anyone noticed the weird mouse movement in this mode regardless if mouse filtering is on or not? If I set to 16-bit color depth (1024x768) OR lower resolutions (i.e. 800x600), my mouse movement is smooth.
I have a feeling that it is related to the new Matrox G400 video driver. I am using a Pentium III 600 Mhz with 256 MB, Windows 98, etc. I never had this with the older driver. I guess I can live with 16-bit color depth. I look forward to receiving replies soon.

    You're using OpenGL, I hope?

Yes. I have the same result.
This is due that the G400 max is fillrate limited at this high resolution and color setting wich brings some strange sluggish mouse movement.

It is like moving fast and then slow right ?
Just look at your framerate and you will see that it goes from 30 to 60 then to 30 and then to 60 again. This variable FPS gives you that movement !

Go back to 800/600 32 or 16 bit and it will be all gone !

        I run 1024x768x32 (with 32bit z-buffer even) just fine. A 600MHz CPU doesn't get the most out of a G400.

Yep! Hmm, I think I know why. I never used -32bpp before and never really paid attention to it until today. I also saw corrupted textures (fruity colors). I am not sure where this problem came from. I actually have a regular G400 (non-MAX).

Yes, is this bad? I never had a problem before.

I get the fruity colors in Black & White. I'm using the 6.10 drivers.

I have a Matrox G400 DualHead running on win2k and using the latest drivers. I have Directx 8 installed.

Half life is only running >20fps in software mode

                  what is wrong?

I am reviving this old thread .

I am still having this slow down problems at high resolutions. I don't understand. It was fine when I used to run 1024x768 16/32-bits and even 11xx something resolutions long time ago. I can play Quake 3 Arena and UT fine at 1024x768 (16-bits).

Did Matrox or Valve change something in the video with the newer drivers? Playing 800x600 is ugly (too many pixels).

                      Thanks.

Being that you guys can always solve problems I came here when I realised my FPS were suffering in HL.

I too have only recently been getting major slow downs, I know a P3 500 is far less than what the G400 MAX needs but I've never had any problems with any HL engine based games, they're very old after all. I can even play Hitman with reasonable FPS @ 1024.

The really odd thing is I set at 70 sometimes jumping to 90ish FPS until I see people, I'm not sure if it's the high res models or what but I drop to roughly 25 FPS which gets a bit difficult to aim with.

I'd like to add that I run Counter-Strike at 640x480 to keep the minimum FPS up also. 800x600 is bearable, but anything above that and the framerate can easily bog down to less than 25 fps during heavy action, which I find terribly unpleasant to watch, let alone play.

Only IRQ sharing is network card and USB port, which unfortunatly can't be avoided because the onboard UDMA/66 controller shares the second PCI slot.
