  • G400 & Winquake / Quakeworld

Having problems running a G400, Windows ME and either winquake, or quakeworld client (2.30)

On running I get black screen, graphic corruption at top, then crash and reboot....

Couple of friends have had same problem, fixed it by buying different gfx cards (for other reasons also) - but don't want to ditch my G400 dual-head just yet.

Anyone know how to fix this ?

Appreciate any advice on this one !

    try this

I have a G200 card, and i used to have some corruptions, try running with this command "INQUAKE.EXE -nowindirect"; if it works , make a shortcut to it on the desktop.
the nowindirect command line parameter tells winquake not to use the vesa vbe and use directx instead.

you can find more in the readme file for winquake.

Thanks for tip - have tried it but to no avail !

There must be a way around this somehow.

Surely there are other G400 users in the same boat ?

Winquake and Quakeworld (software rendering) just freeze up the PC.

Sounds like you got more problems that just your G400...

Have you tried running it from a DOS boot disk ?

How about some of the OpenGL ports ?

If you do try the GL route don't foget to look for the lighting fix. The G400 is very slow with the default lighting.

What does GLQuake do? Have you tried it?

            It is the 6.5x drivers.

If I update past 6.2x winquake locks up the display.

A real PITA as I play quake a lot.

Try one or all of the GLQuake conversions:

With the public release of the source code for both Classic Quake and GLQuake, many significant modifications to the Quake engine are springing up. Some of these modifications are so far-reaching that, as you play, you would never guess that this is still the original Quake under all the fancy new features.

In this section, we focus on the different versions of GLQuake that have been released over the past four years. You may not have realized how many there are, so we will shine the spotlight on the major ones in the following sections.
any of those should run fine and look quite nicely, but I didn't check them out for myself since it's been a really long time that I had Q1 on my disks ...

Even better....If you have Half-Life, upgrade it to the latest version.
It now has a built-in mod, called DMC (Death Match Classic).

The guys at Valve got permission from ID to remake Quake in this mod, and they have used most of the original maps, models, textures, and physics from the original Quake, under the improved graphics and networking engine of HalfLife....
