  • UT Server

I've sorted out some of the routing and latency issues with my ISP so I think I have a decent net connection for a server now. Since Matrox's server has been down for a while, do you guys think it's a good idea for me to set one up so we'd have a common place to play?

Heh well the problem is that I've never had any experience running a UT server so I wouldn't have a clue as to what I would be doing What about hardware? How much power does your average UT server require?

I'm in!!!!! You'll have my bloody gibs splattered all over LS's server.

What kind of connection do you have?????

Connection is the whole thing !!!!!!

Graphics card would be the minimum required by UT as a dedicated server doesn't have to worry about the graphics.

CPU, Memory, and Hard Disk speed are what's important for the server.

As few utilities as possible starting up. (i.e. no scanner, printer, camera, office software, etc.)

A good setup is probably a P3 1 gig, 512 meg memory, ATA 133 hard drives.

Hm this might be a problem, that's more powerful than my main rig LOL!

The only available machines I have now are a Celeron 466, a P133 and a P166. I'm thinking that the Celeron could handle a few players without a problem, so I may try it there and see how many we can have before it starts to lag. I'll probably be upgrading my CPU and mobo soon (depending on the price of the Parhelia), so if the Celeron is not enough, I can throw together another machine using my old CPU (a P3-750) and mobo. The connection is a 768kbps SDSL. Any guides around the net that could help me get started on running a server?

I run a 7 player UT server for clan praccies and it's specs are:
                            P3-550
                            320MB PC100 RAM
                            Matrox G200
Server capped netspeed of 5000 (6 players Internet, me across LAN)

It's used in dedicated server mode so the graphics card is nor relevant though I have been know to do a one on one with it!

The Celeron you have may generate 'lag' on medium->large maps or when the actor intesity gets high (players, projectiles, gibs, etc.).

The Admin Page on PlanetUnreal will help you run a smooth server.

Your netspeed can be set higher than mine (as you've got SDSL) so set your max players lower or the Celeron will hit you!
                            Cheers, Reckless

After we get the server all squared away, get with Oboy and get it's IP info added to the MU clan web page. Then let's all get together and test it.
                              "..so much for subtlety.."

                              System specs:
                              Gainward Ti4600
                              AMD Athlon XP2100+ (o.c. to 1845MHz)
