  • Original UT and Surround Gaming?

All the articles left me under the impression that only Q3 supported variable FOV, until I read this:

ExtremeTech is the Web's top destination for news and analysis of emerging science and technology trends, and important software, hardware, and gadgets.

Tim Sweeney, Epic's chief 3D guru working on next-generation Unreal engine technology had this to say about it: "We've had our hands on a Parhelia for the past few days, and have Unreal Tournament 2003 up and running in triple-monitor mode -- it's very immersive, and surprisingly fast (rendering at 1280*3 x 1024)." The UT engine has had adjustable FOV for quite some time now, and UT 2003 obviously does too, so when that title ships this summer, it will in all likelihood support Surround Gaming. Today, 17" CRT monitors can be had for under $200, and some time in the future a three flat-panel setup will become pretty affordable too. This is by far the coolest application I've seen to date for multi-monitor technology, and Matrox deserves kudos for bringing this to market.
Does anyone know if UT supports variable FOV?

    surround - dunno

but I've played it on my 2 display- tv and monitor.
It only works with sw render. It's mainly useless because the crt border is in the center so aiming is a bit difficult...

So UT does support it? And I'm assuming that the Parhelia drivers support it natively... so variable FOV should work in D3D/OpenGL?

        UT and Q3 support FOV.
Actually the site was about linuxgaming, how to configure X11 for 2 monitors under Q3. It showed a way you can play UT on 5(!) monitors - but only in sw-render.

I'll try to dig up the link for ya.

Yes UT does support surround gaming, unfortunately we couldn't list all the games that do surround gaming on our website due to the traffic the site will attract. I am working on updating the game catalog with the following features:

          FAA-16: Supported, Not Supported
          Gigacolor: Supported, Not Supported
          Surround Gaming: Supported, Not Supported

This will be done from now with every game i get to ensure maximum compatibility with Parhelia.

          Regards.

I am surprised a multiplayer game like UT 2003 would allow this function due to the unbalanced advantage for players that might have this setup.

Woot! As far as an unfair advantage, the same thing could be argued about players who have 21" screens Vs. 15" screens, GF4 Vs. TNT2, etc...

I just seem to remember reading about variable FOV being considered a "cheat" by the folks at Epic back when UT was fairly new, and that they had attempted to disable it for online play. I'm a bit surprised that they would change their stance on that now.

Dunno about that Beezer, but if they did attempt to disable it, they were unsuccessful. I used to run UT windowed with my G400Max (at first because I could easily see IMs from Kindness in ICQ, lol), and in doing so, I reduced the height of the UT window on my display while leaving it full width. I noticed right then that UT automagically adjusted, so that the same FOV was available vertically, while I gained some extra in the horizontal direction. I didn't even need to change any variables using that method.

BTW, this still works, though I don't do it much in XP, since the mouse gets really laggy for some reason if I go into windowed mode.

Snake I have noticed that mouse lag thing in XP to or if you minimize UT window then maximaze you now have 2 mouse pointers one being game cursor the other being desktop cursor very irritating.
