  • New server up...

OK so I finally got a working UT server on my other machine. Currently running the standard map rotation, since I'm just testing to see what kind of load it can handle.
    IP is 64.32.227.80
No password for the time being.

I got the "de version mismatch" message.

From tthe console it said I was pinging 190 but I never actually connected to the server.

With the crowds we have generated on our server I would say a stress test would be easy to pull together. We had 15 the server last night.

I'll try this server tonight if I have time. Pneumatic, when the server was almost maxed last night, I was getting pings of 400-800. I did a speed test on my line in the middle of a game and was getting 500kb down. What are the specs of the server? I just seem to have trouble with it...

Then again, I do have an ATI Rage LT Pro w/8MB VRam. But I was getting a good 15-20 fps (woohoo!!). Man I can't wait to build my new computer...

Specs are pretty much stock. Crash helped me set it up and he actually did the .ini for me so I don't know what the settings are.

I was keeping an eye on the pings when we got full and everyone seemed to stay pretty consistant. Most were below 100.

A buddy just told me about the "MaxClientRate". He said that if it is set too high it will allow people with good bandwidth to dominate it and take it from those that are struggling with it. I haven't gone intot he server yet and checked it out, but here is what the default is. If anyone has any experience (good or ba) with changing this let me know. I am kind of scared to play with it since the vast majority of people get good pings there. But if it won't hurt those with good pings and WILL help the rest I will do it.

          Check out the pings.

Well don't change any settings on account of me. Could the video card be causing lag time?? I've never heard of that, but it's the only other thing I could think of since my connection seemes solid and I'm not even very far away from the server itself.

If your system is really slow, yeah it might get bogged down trying to process video leaving less time to process networking code, causing your ping will go up.

The MaxClientRate sets the maximum rate that a connected user can use. The rate is what is set by the "connection" setting - 28.8k modem sets it to 2600, ISDN sets it to 5000, Cable/DSL sets it to 10000 and LAN sets it to 20000 (these numbers are bytes/sec). So if the MaxClientRate was at 5000, anyone connecting with a rate of higher than that will be forced to use 5000. It should be set according to how many players are on the server and how much bandwidth you have. If you have a 1.5mbps T1, 16 players with a MaxClientRate of 10000 should be OK (10000 x 16 = 160000 = 160KB/sec).

BTW, my server here is a Celeron 466 with 192MB of RAM running Win2K. Connection is a 768kbps SDSL.

Our server is on a T1 so if I don't go above 16 players, messing with the rate wouldn't matter?

If I were to set it to 5000 would the LPB's ping suffer?

                    Would it help the HPB's?

I wouldnt say they would suffer as the 56kers are maxed out at 2600 it would level the playing field alittle, but they(56er's) would still have a concideralbe disadvantage. If the server is set for a Max Rate of 20000 the Highspeed players would ceratinly see a difference.

It may take alittle tinkering to find a happy middle ground. As Liquid_Snake mentioned, I think 10000 sounds good.

If your going to have this open to the public, then you may wont to check on installing something like UTPure
I can’t find a web page of the makers. But PG, OGL and other UT online gaming ladders should have the most up to date ver...

FYI --don't install this unless you are putting it on a server, its better to just dl it from the server you are playing on, and have it in your cache folder. If you install it on a nonserver you may get a version mismatch when playing on other servers.

Nope the rate doesn't really affect ping, unless of course a 56k user sets his rate to 10000, then his ping will shoot up since his connection can't handle the extra data. 10000 is about right if you have a 1.5mbps T1 with 16 players. The default rate is 20000 so that may have caused some problems if a number of people connected using a rate of 20000. Also, see http://www.planetunreal.com/TheAdminPage/Testing101.htm for some commands to help you check the server stats.

If you guys want, I can lock the server with the standard password mu if we're going to have a game. I only have it unlocked now since I want to get as many people as possible to see how much the server can take.

I might play again tonight. I had to delete UT on account of free space and I wanted to try the game Red Faction out. Well....I played Red Faction for like 1 hour and decided it sucks. Gonna remove it and reinstall UT if I have time.
