  • NeverWinter nights crash...

    Hi

Is there anyone who can give me hints on why NWN crash at startup. It crashes right after the intro Atari screen, which by the way is bent in the corners and looks as it I look thorugh the bottom of a glass.
I got it to run about a minute once when I set the config parameter to low, but then I upgraded my graphics card with the new beta driver and now it will not run at all...

    Thanks

It works just fine on my G400 MAX with Win98 AND WinXP, so that'd not the problem! Probably chipset drivers or the infamous VIA/XP infinite loop bug.

...now I've patched all drivers for XP, VIA, game and graphics card BIOS and no result. It still crashes at startup...
I've also run the tweak utility from Matrox and RTFM...now I give up, It won't run...damn...now I'll have to buy a new graphics card...

        Thanks anyway

I'm not really familiar with the engine in NWN, but isn't it based on the same engine used in Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale? (I really don't know, so pardon me if I'm way off base.)

But if it is based on the same game engine, it's primarly a 2D engine, and the only thing accelerated in 3D are the spell effects, and so you might try, in the NWN setup that you should be able to run before you run the game, to set up the card for 2D only. Some earlier Matrox DX drivers, I believe, had some trouble with some of the DX effects and could not do them in hardware. So what you had to do in the BG engine was to set a couple of things for software emulation in the setup program so that the game would run properly. The "read me" with the game should address any such requirements for Matrox cards if they exist. So, set up for 2D first, then check the readme's (or web site FAQs) to determine if your Matrox card requires specific settings to properly run the NWN engine.

Good luck, and pardon me if Black Isle has switched engines on me while I wasn't looking!...

            CrinSo,

            There's also a patch here:

Might want to check it out.

              They did change the engine...

...so my mistake--sorry. NWN uses a new BioWare 3D engine which is obviously quite unlike their earlier 2D engines.

Err... might want to check refresh rates. Sounds (fish-lens bent, etc.) like you're running at a WAY high refresh rate for your monitor?

                  Well..., an update...

I've tried your tips (refresh rate, patch again...) and some I found on the Bioware site and now I got it to run the intro movie. But in the first menu the application hangs.
On the Bioware site they say that I should stop all CD-burning software, screen savers and virus scanning! Then I should uninstall all traces of DirectX SDK.
This doesn't seem lika a very well tested game...

Any other thougths will be much appreaciated...

                  Thanks all...

Well, it runs fine for me with my g400 and the 5.84 betas for win2k/xp, albeit pretty slow with all options turned down.

It sounds like you may be having a problem with securom and your cd drive. A number of people have reported this and when they used a no cd exe the game started up fine. Try gamecopy world for a no cd exe. Also, check nwn.ini file and make sure the refresh rate it lists is what you want to run at-- if not enter it manually and save the file.

Also, do you have Daemon tools installed? If so, you must uninstall it or the game will hang all over the place.

I have Daemon Tools installed and NWN ran fine on mine (until I *cough cough* installed my Parhelia) Hopefully Matrox will fix this problem soon, I'm going through withdrawls.

The most recent version of Daemon (just released in the past week or so) should be okay. Apparently, the version of securom used on NWN's blacklisted daemon tools and the game would randomly hang. I uninstalled daemon before installing the game though, so I can't confirm it personally. I haven't bothered installing any version of daemon after installing the game.

Just passing on info. that was floating around the Bio boards.
