Not conspiracy.. probably just bribery. I would give that a very high likelihood.

      Activision's response:

      Hi,

Thanks for the link. At Technical Support, I do not have any reasons why this was removed. I suggest you might want to post a message on the Ravensoft forums (the developers of the game) at forums.ravensoft.com

Activision has not designed or coded, but merely published a game designed by Ravensoft.

I personally (not Activision's view), don't think that Surround Gaming is cheating, but I can understand why some people can consider it "cheating". I believe that it is an advantage, but I wouldn't really classify it as a cheat. I suggest you post on Ravensoft's forums, developers have been known to frequent the boards and you might get an official answer.

Excellent point here. Perhaps the most cogent of all.

Most of my friends that play Q3 "seriously" tweak the heck out of the config. They edit mouse sensitivity, hunks and sprites and fragments and on and on to get the "best" performance. This includes FOV. None of them play with the default FOV, though perhaps not quite as wide as the Matrox makes possible...

        2 cents.

Maybe they just don't have qualified coders

Nah, seriously - I don't see it as cheating adding surround gaming support.

If it is that much of an issue to people - then enable the same FOV on one monitor, adding black space above & below ( if one has a 21" monitor it could achieve a nice effect I would suppose ).

                response

This is the response I got from Activision:

                Discussion Thread
Response (Raymond Wong) 07/23/2002 08:58 AM
                Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to write to Activision Customer Support.

As you know, Activision is simply the publisher of Soldier of Fortune II. Raven Software is the creator of the game, and would be the ones to contact for any feature requests you might want. Obviously, enabling surround gaming would have to be implemented in software code, and Activision does not do any software development for SOF2. You can contact Raven Software at http://www.ravensoft.com/

this is starting to look like politics....

                  My reply from Activision

                  Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to write to Activision. I have no records of any prior emails from your email address. Although SoF2 is based on the Q3A engine, that does not mean that everything in Q3A will work well in SoF2. We cannot provide support for console commands. If it is not an ingame option like a button or a toggle, then we cannot support it.

As for it being cheating, I personally don't think it should be considered cheating, but it is an advantage that many people do not have. I'm sorry but we cannot provide support for multimonitor gaming in SOF2.

If you look at Matrox's page, SOF2 is not listed as a supported game:
That is just plain stupid.. "We cannot provide support for console commands." Why the hell not?

Here is response to MY question...

                    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Activision^Ã’s Technical Support. I'm sorry to hear about your problem.
Unfortunately, Activision only publishes the game. Ravensoft has developed and coded the game, we
provide support for it. We do not know why they changed their minds about the Surround Gaming.

I suggest you post on the Ravensoft forums http://forums.ravensoft.com

Developers have been known to read and reply on the boards, maybe you can get an official statement from
                    them.

The question was: Will you have an official support for Surround Gaming (Matrox Parhelia feature) for SoF][?

If not - what we shall say to our customers at gamers club who will have identical TripleHead/SG setups
(12 workstations)? Shall we switch to other games which will support such a feature?

                    Thanks.

Ok guys, but this sounds like some sort of screw up.

Jedi Knight 2. Also developed by Raven and published by Activision. Yet it is on the supported Surround Gaming list. This sounds to me like it's a perhaps a FUD thing (or like it has been suggested, nVidia or ATI have bribed them). I would almost garauntee that you could get it working (I'd try, but I don't have two more monitors to try it out on. Just my TV and my 21").

I have both Jedi Knight 2 and SoF 2. I'm pretty sure that JK2's engine is more like Q3A than SoF2, of course with more blood and gore in SoF2 (which is THE reason to play it), so prehaps it's a problem with the modifications to the engine. But that doesn't sound right to me. Which is why I'm thinking it's sounding more like bribery!

Just a few thoughts on this. I do say that you shouldn't blame Activision for this, because obviously SOME of their games are supporting Surround Gaming. I suggest we all email Raven to find out what the hell is going on. And while we're at it, ask them for ports to linux! They allowed SoF 1 to be ported over, at least give linust the second one!

Maybe someone with SOFII and a Parhelia could try these settings?

                          set r_mode -1
                          set r_customWidth 2400
                          set r_customHeight 600
                          set cg_fov 143
                          vid_restart

and see if the game accepts it?

Because nVidia bribed them not to.
