  • What resolution is right for gaming...

I have seen sites benching at 1600x1200x32 only, nowadays.

That is certainly one way to test a graphics card at the hairy limits of performance, but it begs the question: at what resolution are people actually gaming?

I after all, don't have a monitor that even supports 16x12. so when I set my game at that, what am I actually seeing?

The highest I game at is 1280x1024x32. And that is where I look for benchmarks...

BTW, this is at what resolution would you game if you owned the card of you dreams (Parhelia, GF4, ATI 9700, etc.)

I am using 1024x768x32 and since I have the P. I am usually running it with 16xFAA.
Everything above this resolution wouldn't be good for me, because my montitor drops back to 60Hz then

Only for some 2d games like SimCity, Age of Empires and so on would be a resolution above 1024x768 actually useful, because you have a larger field of view.

Where's the 1280x960x32 option? (Insert rant about proper aspect ratio's here )

Seriously, that is the resolution I would vote for if it were available. Or maybe 1152x864x32. Currently I run all of my games in 1024x768x32 with 16x FAA. So from my stand point nothing more is neccesary.

I've been running everything at 1024x768x32x16FAA lately. It looks much nicer than higher resolutions without FAA.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

does 1280x1024x32x16XFAA run well for you, in the games that you play?

or do you experience slowdowns and whatnot?

1280by960/1024 is all that anyone needs. All current games tend to nearly max out their quality at this res. Of course, this will change in the future. Some people can tell the difference at higher resolutions but this also lowers framerate. UT, Q3, Star Trek Armada II don't seem to get any better beyond this. It's a very nice balance point.

I game at 1600X1200x32 when I can. On older games I bump up to 1920 because 2048 is @ 60hz.

I'd think you really would have to specify the screen size. You would run at much higher resolutions if you were gaming via HDTV on a 10 foot screen with an adequate graphics card for instance.

I've been running the Following at 1280x1024x32xFAA16@85hz with no problems. Was running the same games on my R8500 at 1024x768 prior to this, except for Warcraft 3 which I didnt have till yesterday. Performance was the same or better except for the UT2K3, where the Parhelia was a bit slower then the R8500.

Warcraft 3 (this game kicks ass with FAAx16 on)

I've been playing UT at 1600x1024x32bit with 16xaa and all resolutions at highest setting with my Parhelia. Sure looks sweet.

highest I go to is 1152x864@85Hz for FPS games because that's all my moniter is rated to for 85Hz , but I do play games like warcraft 3 at 1600@60Hz..

I play it safe with rez @ refreshrate....5 year old 19" Optiquest which still has a great picture, and I would like to keep it that way until I can afford a better 19"+ moniter.
