  • Major performance problems w/ Parhelia

So, having recently gotten my self a Parhelia and thrown out the old GeForce3, I was hoping to see somewhat of an improvement both imagewise and in stability. Seeing as the GF3 is quite a bit older than the P, I really wasn't expecting a lot of difference in the FPS-department.

That is, unfortunately, where I was wrong.

The only two games i really play are Counter-Strike and GTAIII, and at least one of them is based on a really old 3D engine.

Firing up Counter-Strike for the first time with the Parhelia, on a freshly installed Windows XP with the 1.0.4.231 drivers, and connecting to my own test-server indicated nothing "wrong". 99 FPS wherever I went no matter what resolution I tried (1024x768 to 1600x1200). This isn't really much different from the GF3 which did the same, so I wasn't really suprised. The real suprise, or perhaps disappointment, came when I connected to a server I usually play on. A normal map, with 30 or so players. At start the FPS was steady at 40-45. Being used to 99FPS with the GF3, I reflected upton it in my head, but thought nothing more of it. After all, I've read so much on these forums how "smooth" graphics means so much more than raw FPS. The real chock came in the first standoff. 3, maybe 4 opponents on the screen at the same time, and the FPS went down to 20. One of my team mates ran past me and the FPS continued down to 15. Then I died. There was nothing I could do. Hoping this was just a one-time "error", I continued to play. With the same results Each and every time 3 or 4 people is on the screen and some shooting is going on, the P drops down to 20 or so FPS. This, unfortunately makes CS unplayble.

Anyway, having read in these forums how GTAIII would be really smooth, I decided to give that a shot as well. Much to my dismay, I had to turn down the resolution from 1280x1024x32 to 1024x768x16 to make it run remotely smooth. I figured I could live with that, so I continued to play and stole a police-car. Turning on the sirens and having two or three other cars on screen brings the game to a halt. I can actually count the FPS by hand, as they are being drawn on screen. A rough guess would be 1-5FPS during graphics intensive scenes, and 25-30FPS under normal circumnstances.

Now, I'm no graphics genius, but is this really how it's supposed to be? I was really expecting a somewhat faster card? What are your experiences? Has any of you tried GTA3 or CS and would like to comment on it?

It doesn't matter if I use the OpenGL or Direct3D render in CS.

      Machine specs:

      ASUS A7M266-D w/ C-Media 8738 sound chip
      2 AthlonMP 1800+
      512MB PC2100 DDR
      NEC USB 2.0 controller
      Matrox Parhelia 512 (retail)
      Tekram DC-390U3D
      Pinnacle PCTV pro
      3Com 905C-TX
      Seagate Cheetah 36GB 10k RPM SCSI U160
      Fujitsu MAN3367 36GB 15k RPM SCSI U160
      Plextor Ultraplex 40Max CD-ROM SCSI
      LiteOn LTD-163D DVD-ROM IDE

and some other USB peripherals that I rarely connect. And ofcourse a keyboard, mouse and a monitor.

I would surely hope my machine has enough "horsepowers" to drive the Parhelia at reasonable speed.

It's the weekend, give it time... oh and most people don't have issues with either as they aren't running dual cpu systems. Weigh that in and those who would normally respond won't as they don't have problems.

Post you problem on Matrox's forums. We're looking at a few dual issues atm and hopefully if this isn't a configuration/setup issue will be resolved in short order.

but the mayor drop in performance with opengl games is a driver isue for everybody , right

Not when anyone using a single cpu setup does not experience this problem.

For those with dual systems most don't have this issue either. It could be a bug in the BIOS or it could be a configuration issue. But regardless this isn't Matrox and they need to know of your problem for this to be addressed.

I've now posted it to the Matrox support forum. Let's hope and pray it's a driver issue

I played CS tonight, and the performance was lower than my G400MAX
Also, i still can't get my refreshrate above 60Hz.

Let's hope this is resolved soon!

Psycho, if you follow the directions that have been explained multiple times here on how to set refresh rate this would be a non issue.

Besides, I don't think that all of your problems are do to most anything but PEBKAC

Just in case, flash to your latest motherboard's bios.

As i told you before, deleting all my monitor profiles and starting completely from scratch doesn't help. and quake3 based games run fine at 85Hz. So explain me, what am i doing wrong then? Jesus man. If you want to think i don't know what i'm doing then go ahead. I'm just trying to find a solution here, and it's definately not a pebkac problem, i even searched the whole console list of half-life to see if there's any setting related to refreshrates and there isn't. If you're so bright then solve it for me, oh great great Greebe.

My system is completely uptodate concerning drivers and bios.
