So, having recently gotten my self a Parhelia and thrown out the old GeForce3, I was hoping to see somewhat of an improvement both imagewise and in stability. Seeing as the GF3 is quite a bit older than the P, I really wasn't expecting a lot of difference in the FPS-department.
That is, unfortunately, where I was wrong.
The only two games i really play are Counter-Strike and GTAIII, and at least one of them is based on a really old 3D engine.
Firing up Counter-Strike for the first time with the Parhelia, on a freshly installed Windows XP with the 1.0.4.231 drivers, and connecting to my own test-server indicated nothing "wrong". 99 FPS wherever I went no matter what resolution I tried (1024x768 to 1600x1200). This isn't really much different from the GF3 which did the same, so I wasn't really suprised. The real suprise, or perhaps disappointment, came when I connected to a server I usually play on. A normal map, with 30 or so players. At start the FPS was steady at 40-45. Being used to 99FPS with the GF3, I reflected upton it in my head, but thought nothing more of it. After all, I've read so much on these forums how "smooth" graphics means so much more than raw FPS. The real chock came in the first standoff. 3, maybe 4 opponents on the screen at the same time, and the FPS went down to 20. One of my team mates ran past me and the FPS continued down to 15. Then I died. There was nothing I could do. Hoping this was just a one-time "error", I continued to play. With the same results Each and every time 3 or 4 people is on the screen and some shooting is going on, the P drops down to 20 or so FPS. This, unfortunately makes CS unplayble.
Anyway, having read in these forums how GTAIII would be really smooth, I decided to give that a shot as well. Much to my dismay, I had to turn down the resolution from 1280x1024x32 to 1024x768x16 to make it run remotely smooth. I figured I could live with that, so I continued to play and stole a police-car. Turning on the sirens and having two or three other cars on screen brings the game to a halt. I can actually count the FPS by hand, as they are being drawn on screen. A rough guess would be 1-5FPS during graphics intensive scenes, and 25-30FPS under normal circumnstances.
Now, I'm no graphics genius, but is this really how it's supposed to be? I was really expecting a somewhat faster card? What are your experiences? Has any of you tried GTA3 or CS and would like to comment on it?
