Leech, sure they swarmed in afterward... but then they stole a mess of shit long before that too. Sadly the US Court system is about as speedy as a tortoise... oh it gets there... someday, that is if the race isn't already over

The guy still has a year for a Parhelia backend, and if he can do one for 3dlabs cards (which is gonna be like 0,3% of the users, unless Creative comes up with a consumer targeted card) he can surely do a Parhelia backend too. It's just that he probably had more time to spend with a P10, or he is taking sides again.

Well why is there support for the 3Dlabs card? I remeber one of Carmacks Plans where he just about jizzed his pants about the the new P10. Even though over Pre/reviews of the card showed it had Major Suck for gaming performance. Given that Doom III is over a year away and the way Nvidia can't get the NV30 out like it seems, well the 3D Card Sector might be in for a major shake up over the next year or so. I'm sure that M will have the driver problems fixed in the next year and I'm sure that a New Parhelia rev will be out by end of 2003 (I hope)

leech ... you're comments are very offensive and narrow-minded. I for one mainly bought my G400 Max to play only one game, Q3A. I bought the card for its overall usefulness, not just for gaming. I probably will select my next graphics card based on how well it plays Doom 3 as well as its other features. At this point I'll probably wait seeing how I'm not that driven to invest my time in other games in the meantime.

Yup, those were part of the good ol' days (actually it kind of sucked) When I had my Millenium 2 and Canopus Pure3D card. Oh wait, I still have them, they're just not being used :-)

Offensive and narrowminded? at least I don't contradict my statements from one sentence to the next. First you say you bought your G400Max for Q3A, but then the next sentence you say "I bought the card for its overall usefulness, not just for gaming." That's my point, who buys a video card for ONLY one game? I'm not talking about any other use, just for ONE game! I bought my Parhelia because of EVERYTHING that the card does, and because I know Matrox will create stable and great drivers, and because they support linux. Games are a second to everything else. If you only want to play games, buy an PS2 or an Xbox or something. That'll play Doom3 just fine.

It's a shame that they didn't include the Parhelia in their back-end program.
I think there are more Parhelia owners out there than they are thinking, and there will be more, if I take a look at the current price situation:
I bought my Parhelia for around 540€, that was mid july. Now I am looking at the stores and can see the OEM version for only 393€, Retail goes for 464€. Since the prices are dropping, it can compete better with GF4 cards, they are selling for around 360-420€.
Also I think that it is wrong to put SiS off the list, their Xabre chips seem to be good alternates to ATI/NV based cards out there, and they are playing in the low-budget market, which means they will automatically sell more low-cost cards than cards which are more than 300€ or something.
Specs:
MSI 745 Ultra :: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ :: 1024 MB PC-266 DDR-RAM :: HIS Radeon 9700 (Catalyst 3.1) :: Creative Soundblaster Live! 1024 :: Pioneer DVD-106S :: Western Digital WD800BB :: IBM IC35L040AVVN07

I think the reason for supporting the p10, is because the p10 is exactly what carmack always wanted in a gpu, i think he is supporting it because he likes to play with it, and not because it will make gamers happy.
besides it is an opengl2 compliant gpu, so by supporting that, he also supports all future opengl2 cards, the p10 support isn´t based on propiertary extensions, but on a new opengl-standard(I think).
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.
Speaking of OpenGL 2.... Are we going to see OpenGL 2 for the Parhelia? Considering they're going to get certified drivers, I'd hope so. Also will the OpenGL drivers for linux be certified? Here's to hoping....

It just occured to me that the reason John C is not including a back end for the current Parhelia is that he might have some insider information about a possible up-coming update to the Parhelia.
I mean as it currently stands, Parhelia is DX8.1 with some DX9.
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and NV30 are both DX 9
I don't know what the P10 will be when it comes out through Creative Labs, but it might also be DX9
Its just my opinion, no facts, but just an educated guess at the best, and a shot in the dark at the worst.
If Matrox come out with an update to the Parhelia soon, it goes against everything they've ever done in their history.
While this card is the first to have the clock speed mentioned (so that they could maybe sell a faster clock soon), I don't see them updating that core.
Maybe add in a 3rd RAMDAC, although that might be difficult. Leave it up to the chip fab experts to help there

Who knows maybe they'll turn over a new leaf and have a revised core out next year. 6 months is too much/too soon and I can deal with getting a new Matrox Card every year or so
