  • 3DMark2001 BSOD with Marvel G200 and Win2K

I just upgraded my system to Windows 2000 Pro and now I get the following BSOD when I run 3DMark2001 Demo with my Marvel G200-TV:

    *** STOP:0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xBF0BA624, 0x00000000, 0x0000000C)

    *** Address BF03A624 base at BF091000, Datestamp 3b9f71b2 - G200D.dll

My system configuration is below. The G200D.dll is version 5.12.01.129 (latest patch).

My system configuration is as follows:

ASUS CUSL2-C Motherboard with 512MB Crucial PC133 RAM
    Windows 2000 SP2
    Video Tools 2.04
    Driver 5.39
    DirectX 8.1
    Matrox BIOS 3.3-034
WD ATA100 7200 RPM Drives with 8MB Cache (smokin')
    Pentium III 1GHz
    64MB Aperture (max unfortunately)

My system is very stable. It just bothers me that I can't run this. Any ideas?

I'm afraid to Say that the G200 is OLD! TECH and it is not designed for the DX 8 features that 3dmark tests
There is nothing wrong with the card, it just doesn't work with 3dmark 2001

Uh, yes it is old, but it CAN run the 3dmark 2001 Demo and Benchmarks. As I just ran it on my system. (Get about 3 fps with the demo of Nature, but hey it IS G200 and on the PCI with a Sound Blaster Live! ).

Back to the original post, I'm afraid I can't actually help much, except recommend try different previous drivers. I've got the previous display driver to the current latest drivers for the G200 Marvel for Win2k right now, that's working fine for me, but I can't say for sure if it'll work for you.

      Good Luck.

      System with G200 PCI:
Gigabyte 8IRXP (Yes, THAT supposedly buggy board)
      Intel Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
      1GB DDR ECC RAM (2x512MB)
Matrox Marvel G200 PCI (With all the extras on it)
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 1024 Player

Well, obviously with the limited 16MB RAM onboard the card (and being on the PCI bus with a hog like the SBLive!), you're limited to the lower screen resolutions.

With everything set on the lowest setting on this card, nearly all the tests in the benchmark can be run, with the exception of the Environmental Mapping tests and the Nature test.

Frame speeds, varied from 5 to 27 fps throughout all the tests. Although in the higher poly ones, this usually drops to about 3 to 8 fps.

As to how well they looked, obviously not as nice as on the newer cards, but it does look good, especially if you remember that this technology is around 4-5 years old.

I am pleased to say that the Matrox Marvel G200-TV AGP DOES run 3DMark2001 (not all tests, but it does run). After looking through some other postings, I learned that a common theme with the G200 and Windows 2000 was to disable Bus Mastering. After I disabled Bus Mastering, the G200 performed flawlessly (and very slowly as expected). My 3DMark2001 Score is a whopping 430 ;-) 3DMarks at 640x480x16.

If anyone knows why Bus Mastering must be disabled, I'd love to know.

My complete system configuration is as follows:

Marvel G200-TV AGP 16 MB running at 2x AGP (no tweaks)
            ASUS CUSL2-C with 512 MB Crucial PC133 CAS2 RAM
Pentium III 933 @133 FSB (not 1GHz as stated above)
Diamond Monster MX300 with 5.12.1.2559 Beta Aureal Driver
            Matrox Video Tools 2.04
            Matrox Display Driver 5.39
Matrox AGP Fix (g200d.dll and g200m.sys version 5.12)
            Matrox BIOS 3.3-34
Western Digital 7200 RPM ATA100 Drives with 8MB Cache
Intel 82801BA ATA IDE Driver 2.2.2.2145
            DirectX 8.1
Windows 2000 SP2 and all SP3 patches (except AutoUpdate)
Pinnacle Systems DV500 Plus DV Capture Card

You got nature to work on G200??? i can't even get it to work on my G550. how did you do that? (btw i also have G200 too, love that card)

              P.S. wow. 1 GB of DDR + P4 1.8 and a 7 years old g200.

Nature cannot run on a G450 or G550, nor a GF2 or a Radeon7500 for that matter because those cards simply do not support the needed pixelshaders. It might be possible to circumvent this with a software fallback, but this would have a severe impact on performance and most likely will not really display the intended result.

Any thoughts on why Bus Mastering must be disabled with the Marvel G200 running under Windows 2000?

Here's an interesting post that suggests a proper hardware configuration when using a CUSL2-C. It's for a Millenium G400 AGP, but I would think it applies to the Marvel G200 AGP, too.

After upgrading my Marvel G200 driver to Revision 5.82.018 (the one that is posted for the G450eTV detects the Marvel G200 and installs just fine) and following the CUSL2-C hardware configuration thread above, my Marvel G200 runs 3DMark2001SE with Bus Mastering enabled. My 3DMark2001SE benchmark is 1207. The benchmark did not run Nature. The full demo runs quite well. My 3DMark2001SE settings were 640x480x16 with 16-bit Z-buffer, No AA, Double Buffering, 16-bit texturing.

Interesting note: The demo and benchmark appear to run only after I run 3DMark2000 first. If I don't run the 3DMark2000 demo first, I still get the G200D.dll BSOD first reported in this posting.

Looks like we're making progress - the 5.86 drivers fix the 3DMark2001SE BSOD problem. I installed the 5.86 drivers by first unzipping the 5.82 drivers (for the G450eTV), copying the 5.86 g200*.* files into the 5.82 installation directory, and then running the 5.82 setup. The Marvel G200 AGP is properly detected and installed with no .inf file mods. My 3DMark2001SE 3DMarks increased from 1207 with 5.82 to 1219 with 5.86.

Looking forward to the next set of G200 drivers. Maybe these will do the trick?

My driver file versions are as follows:

                        Display Driver: 5.12.01.1860
                        Kernel Driver: 5.12.01.1860
                        Direct Draw/3D: 5.12.01.1860
                        OpenGL: 2.59.063
                        Powerdesk: 6.82.016

Driver package still reported as 5.82.

5.88 Beta drivers correctly recognize the Marvel G200 AGP-TV and work just fine. They still don't resolve the "black lines" that I see in the OpenGL 3DPipes screen saver and in HalfLife (when I run in OpenGL mode), but the drivers are solid otherwise.
