  • Matrox G400 Agp question + counterstrike

    Hey,
I have some questions about my Matrox G400 card. Now it runs on AGP2x. If I run it on AGP4x, it crashes, what can I do? Does it have profit when you run it @ AGP4x I saw on this forum that somebody was running the card @ AGP1x.

I want to tweak the card to have a better framerate in counterstrike.
    My system: PIII800, 256MbRAM 133MhZ, Motherboard: Tyan Trinity 400, OS: W2k SP3

Are there many options to tweak it? I have al low polygon models is CS. I'am playing it @ 1024*768 in OpenGL. I 've 30-35 frames, with drops. I think the framerate is good enough, but I want that it's more stable. Solutions????

    Thx

    ...

Is it good that I turn of the Vsync?
What 's going to happen when I use AGP1x?

AGP speed won't effect anything except synthetic benchmarks.

Turning off V-sync may increase your fps, at the expense of visual tearing. I'd go ahead and do it though.

For running W2K, more RAM would be nice. 256MB isn't helping your game playing any.

With my G400 in Win9x (and 512MB of RAM) I was getting mid-40s to mid-50s fps in CS at 1024x768, which would drop into the low thirties with heavy smokebombs.

Low-poly models probably aren't actually helping you much.

Have you tried setting the game to 16bpp? 32-bit color may be slowing you down a bit.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

        OK!

Yes, but how can I turn of the V-sync?
Can you give me some more information about the AGP thing. Can I better run it @ AGP1x?
And about the 16bit, I think that HL only runs on 16bit. Or how do you set it @ 16bit? My desktop 's 1152x... @ 16bit.

And what about the busmastering and Zbuffering.
I red that if you disable busmastering that you can sometimes have a higher framerate. Also with zbuffering.

Bus mastering should always be turned on.

For optimal speed in OpenGL with a G400, I would run with 16 bit color depth, a 16 bit z-buffer, and v-sync set to off.

To turn off v-sync use the Matrox Technical Support Tweak Utility.

As far as AGP speed is concerned, run at the highest speed at which your system allows you to run without crashing. However, you will not gain many fps by modifying this setting.

if he's using the MTSTU then try setting optimise for speed under OGL.

                Yes, ok.
The Vsync works only with D3D I saw.
I am playing in openGL, it's faster and better.
Now my OS is WinXP. And the frames are a little lower.
The TurboGL drivers, are the also available for XP? Or any good drivers and updates?

TurboGL drivers are very old! They are from late 1999- early 2000. You will be better off using the latest OpenGL ICD, from the latest drivers. Windows XP takes more RAM than Win9x, so performance might suffer if you have 256 MB or less. I would recommend at least 512 MB for WinXP gaming.
