I don't suppose anyone of you are playing Tom Clancy's Raven Shield?
After patch 1.1, it forces you to authenticate your cdkey, even if you are playing on a LAN.
That kinda sucks, since we maybe won't have any internet access on our LANs, thus forcing us to play in a bug-ridden 1.0, and with less maps since all the map-packs require at least 1.2.

This is truly disturbing. I hope this is a msinterpretation. I beat single player about a year ago and just recently I started playing again in anticipation. I beat Blue-Shift a week ago and I am almost finsihed Opposing Force. This will severely kill interest in the game if it is true.

WHy can't they be like Unreal Tournament. They knew this copy-protection was futile so they just took it out after they had made their money.

So what if their server goes down for a short while: you can't play single player ???? Hmmm this might be one of those decisions that is reversed in a while after lots of unhappy customers. I guess it'll stem the flow of casual warezing though which is a kinda good thing for the PC games industry. I'm sure there'll be plenty of hacks around for those who know what they're doing in no time at all...

I think we should stick to the thread in the Lounge. This isn't really about the game as it is a financial decision.

I don't see how this is necessarily any different than now. The only difference is you need a SteamID to play HL2 online instead of a WonID like you need in HL1 to play.

There will be three packages and 2 different ways to get it. Package 1 is single player only for low-cost sellers like Target and Walmart. A Single and multiplayer package for EB and Best Buy type places. And a third with extra crap like a soundtrack or poster or something with the full game.

You can either buy the game at a store or buy it directly off Steam. If you buy it off Steam then you pay Steam/Valve. Otherwise you don't.

Valve has already announced that they will NOT charge people to play HL2 online on Steam. You only need a SteamID with your legally purchased game.

LAN games I assume would not require an authentication to Steam, but I don't know.

The pay for content, as far as I have ever seen, is to access Steam features, such as CS beta's and Steam only games.

You don't need a WON ID to play the single player version.

Plus, I bet that downloading the (guaranteed) patch will count, so it will always expect to be able to log on.
