  • Halflife 2 Sourcecode leaked

A version of the HL2 sourcecode has leaked to the net, and are buildable.
Valve has no official statement on if this is a fake or not, but after looking at the code, I'd say that this is the real deal.

It compiles, and contains a heapload of tools. It produces a hl2.exe and a tf2.exe .

Some people are thinking that this leak will delay HL2 more, since the netcode is plainly visible, and hackers will surely exploit it somehow.

    What do you all think?

It is real. I think the game will be delayes now by at least a few months. Major trouble ahead for Valve, and also for ATI (who promised HL2 bundles).
      no matrox, no matroxusers.

Well I think if u got a 9600XT or 9800Xt you would get a coupon to get it when ever its released. Also is it the full verison?
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Check halflife2.net, Gabe confirmed it's real and a build from mid-september. Someone apparently compromised his machine using a new Outlook (!!!!!) exploit, and then copied the source tree. Seems a bit unprofessional to me to leave the source code on machines with a direct connection to the Internet.

Is is the full code just without textures, models, etc so you cannot actually compile HL2 from it.

It really boggles my mind people still use OE!! If anyone needs an argument to switch to a secure email client: this is what you've been waiting for.

Valve will probably have some trouble with some other companies lawyers, like Miles for their sound system and Havok for the physics engine.

Even if things are bad for Valve, they should have kudos for extremely well written code.
                It's sleek, structured and fast.

Maybe someone can port it to linux now

All kidding aside.... That's what they get for depending on something as crappy as Outlook Express for their email.

Not only has the source code been leaked, but now it seems the game itself is getting circulated on the net. Won't be long now till we start seeing it everywhere.....

                      Question for y'all:

I don't know much about coding and security, but does the fact that the source code is out in the open mean that when I buy and install this game it's a potential vulnerability on my computer?

Me not likey if that's the case.

Yes, there will probably be a bunch of stupid ****ers that will screw around with the source to find vulnerabilities to crack you and probably find/create cheats in the game.

I think it makes sense as a cost saving measure, though it's obvious in this case that the savings weren't worth it.

Well, at the same time we can have people looking at the code that would want to benefit the game, so in the long run this could really help Half Life 2. Only major drawback that I see with the source code leak is some IP loss from Valve and probably a short delay of the game. I still think the game will be out for the Xmas holidays. Oh, and it looks like the info found about the actual game being leaked (textures and all) was false....for now. No one knows for sure everything that the hackers got.
