  • G400/450 out of luck with Knights of the Old Republic?

    Hi everyone...

My son bought Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic at Best Buy today. It's the first PC game he's bought in a long time since he's had his PS2 and Gamecube...

It's very picky about its video card chipsets (Nividia geforce 2>; ATI Radeon 8500>). Our two computers are running an old G400 and a dual head G450. Not surprisingly, it doesn't run on either machine.

A quick check at lucasarts.com, shows the Matrox cards on a *long* list of unsupported cards.

Does anyone know of any plans for older Matrox cards to support the Open GL etc. that this game requires? I like our Matrox cards, and for the cost of a new video card, he might as well buy an X-box.

    Any information greatly appreciated. Thanks...

    Dennis

According to the game's website, it requires the following:
"Graphics Card: 32 MB OpenGL 1.4 compatible PCI or AGP 3D Hardware Accelerator with Hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L) Capability required"

The G400 series does not have hardware T&L support and does not have drivers that fully support all the OpenGL 1.4 extensions. Unfortunately, due to hardware limitations, I do not think Matrox can remedy this situation, even if they wanted to .

You will most likely need a newer graphics card if you want to play this game on the PC...

You could always try to run this game with 3DAnalyzer (caution - presumably some not work safe popups - I don't know, I don't have unwanted popups ). Dunno if it's possible with KOTOR though...finding a config for KOTOR (if one exist somewhere...) is recommended instead of playing with settings yourself.

Well we took the game back to Best Buy. They balked at taking it back, since the box had been opened, but my wife's persuasive ways convinced them...

It'll be easier, and chaeper, to find a friend with an X-box...

        Thanks for the help.
