The latest info is:

Some HL2 files will start to pre-load from steam starting tomorrow. And the latest official release date as of yesterday is "VERY SOON" (bastards stole our trademark ). I suspect it will go gold by the end of the month and out by the end of Septemember.

BTW, CS:S will go live at 7pm PST tonight for all qualified participants.

BTW, if anyone cares, the pre-loading of some HL2 content has been pushed back to Monday.

I just ordered an X800 XT and it comes iwth CS:CZ, so I'll soon be playing CS:S.

With less than 2 weeks till then, if Valve doesn't announce GOLD this week, I don't think this will pan out.
Not too worried, I pre-ordered mine a month ago. I'll have it when it gets here

Unfortunately, they don't really know. The person that told you just looked into the computer and saw a date. Everything is just speculation at this point.

It's generally accepted that the stores do not really know when the game is going ot be released and they are just guessing. But who knows *shrugs*.

My personal opinion is that the game will go gold within 3 weeks if the pre-load starts this week.
