So - looking through this thread, this game looks a lot like a more "real-time" version of "Galaxy".

Is that more or less accurate?

If you've never heard of Galaxy, it's a PBEM (Play By EMail) game, usually played at a rate of one or two turns per week. All the players email orders to the server, and get results when the turn runs (at some appointed time).

see http://www.cs.utk.edu/~bampton/ (the first two links) for more info

More or less. Turns are equal to a month in game time and occur every twenty minutes of real-time. Most actions/orders occur over a number of turns, ranging from a few months to a couple hundred months. Example, I one of my research projects will take 292 months to complete - in other words, 5840 minutes or a little over 4 days.

Well, I've taken the plunge. Let us see if I can catch up at all. If not I'll learn what I'm doing and do some stomping next round.

Just been attacked (massively) by Tartarus and (less impressively) by Crucio Station. Lost all 7 starbases but v. few ships, but this does mean I am rather vulnerable. Should I need to, is there any chance I could store pop on planets with spare capacity? I'm not at that stage by any means yet, but if this continues I will be... and with > 3.5mln population I'd quite like to protect that asset

Interestingly though, I've only gained prestige from these attacks so far...
