    Freespace Woes

    Guys, I need some help here... While I'm trying to play Descent Freespace, the screen will suddenly become all gibberish ( flashing lines and dots, etc. ). Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior? I have a Millenium G200 16MB, with the 2.3 BIOS, 4.51 drivers, and Direct-X 6.1.

    Are you overclocking the G200? It could be a sign of pushing it too far.

    It could be a heat issue. If you haven't already, you might try an old 486 fan on the G200's heatsink.

    It might be the extra 8meg of ram. Is this a 16meg base card, or an 8 meg card with the added 8 meg module? If the latter, try pulling off that extra memory.

      Hi Kruzin', to answer your questions...

      (1) I'm not overclocking the card...
      (2) I have a lasagna cooler already attached to the chipset.
      (3) This is an 8MB card with the 8MB add-on.

      I'm probably going to try removing the RAM, even though I'm not overclocking the card. I have read where people were having trouble in certain situations with the add-on RAM. Oh well, I hate to get rid of it, but if it fixes the problem, then so be it. Thanks Kruzin' !

        I sometimes get the same problem with various games. The way I generally solve it is to drop down to a lower driver version which usually does the trick.

          Graham, that's actually a good suggestion to try also. However, I can't use it for a long term fix because I need to 4.51 drivers to use the ICD. Thanks for the suggestion though!

            Hey Kruzin, I tried removing the extra 8MB from my Millenium and guess what... no more hang-ups. I find this both odd and discouraging for two reasons. First, I am not overclocking the card, so I shouldn't have any problems related to heat, etc. Secondly, I paid quite a bit for extra memory because I do a substantial amount of image editing... is there some kind of design flaw in the Millenium G200 pcb that causes it to be unstable with the added RAM? Just curious... but, at least I can enjoy an uniterrupted game of Freespace now. I hope this fixes the problem for good. Thanks for the tip Kruzin!

              Manex - is the RAM module you have an original Matrox one? Many of the cheapo ones are known to cause problems.
              If it is, then you could RMA either the card or the memory module. If it isn't, take the memory back and get it replaced with a proper one.

                Yup. What Steve said. I had a bad one myself. 3rd party junk. Gave my corruptions and lockups without overclocking. I returned it for credit, and settled on 8meg (I thought the 16meg might help AutoCAD, but it didn't).

                  Well, I've got some bad news... I was playing Freespace tonight and blammo, the game froze on me and I had to do a hard boot. Well, the search goes on for a solution...

                    Steve, the SGRAM module is authentic Matrox ( it's silkscreened on the pcb ). I've never had any trouble out of it before, since purchasing it in September of last year. Hmmm, I wonder how long the warranty is on the SGRAM modules? Does anyone have a clue? I wonder if they would give me credit toward a G400 MAX instead? Thanks again for all the help guys!...

                      Just a quick tip:

                      Try cleaning contacts on PCB (those that plugs into AGP/PCI slot). Seems that they are dirty. Heard that someone cleans
                      his V770 and the guy has no more hang-ups...
