It did that to me the very forst time I tried to run it too. I thing it was looking for a voodoo card. The second time I tried, it started up fine...
If it still won't start up, go to the slavezero folder, and edit the SZoptions.ini file. Swith the line "Renderer DLL = ...\d3d.dll" where "..." is the path to your game directory. From this file, you can also change your res, turn on bump mapping, and plenty of other things
